PITTSBURGH-After collecting six consecutive double-doubles, junior Laine Selwyn outdid herself as she posted what is believed to be the first triple-double in school history as the University of Pittsburgh women's basketball team cruised to a 77-45 triumph over visiting St. John's Saturday afternoon. The win snapped the Panthers' seven-game losing skid and improved their record to 7-15 overall and 2-9 in the Big East.
Selwyn earned the amazing feat in style, pouring in 12 points, grabbing 11 caroms and dishing out 10 assists. The Coral Springs, Fla., native also collected three steals and made 8-of-10 free throws in 32 minutes of action.
After opening with a 9-6 advantage at the 14:59 mark in the first half, Pittsburgh jumped all over the Red Storm and raced out to a 29-6 run, taking a 38-12 lead with three and half minutes to go before intermission. The Panthers held St. John's to 16 first-half points, gaining a 44-16 halftime lead. The 16 points in a half were a season-low for Pittsburgh's defense.
The Panthers forced the Red Storm into 17 turnovers in the first 20 minutes, while the Blue and Gold had only five miscues.
In the second half, Pittsburgh extended its lead to as many as 37 points, 75-38, and relaxed for its first win since Jan. 5, a 63-61 victory over Georgetown.
For the game, the Panthers shot 39 percent (25 of 63) from the field while St. John's managed only 36 percent (17 of 47) of its shots. Pittsburgh also won the war on the boards, 41-33, while forcing 23 turnovers. The 45 points allowed by the Panthers were also a season-low.
Freshman Haley Harguth (Beaverton, Ore./Beaverton) caught fire and poured in a game-high 20 points, including five 3-pointers. Junior Brooke Stewart (North Versailles, Pa./East Allegheny) added 16 points, while senior Bettina Love (Rochester, N.Y./Edison Tech) posted 12 points, seven rebounds and three blocks.
Shemika Stevens led St. John's with 14 points and Patrycia Gulak added 11 markers.
Pittsburgh hits the road on Wednesday for a Big East matchup against Villanova. Game time is slated for 7:30 p.m.
