WHAT TO LOOK FOR
The Pitt men will be led by a strong group of upperclassmen along with three who will be making their debut in a conference championship meet on Friday.
Leading the way for the Panthers is redshirt sophomore Jack Miller who has been Pitt's top finisher in all three meets so far this season including a victory at the season opening Yinzer Classic and a second place finish at the Penn State National Open a couple weeks ago. Sophomore Luke Henseler is enjoying a strong season so far and is coming off an 11th place finish last time out at the Penn State National Open. Josh Higgins has the most experience on the squad at the Championships meets as he will be making his fourth start at ACC's while Evan Addison and Tyler Rollins will be making their third start at the conference meet.
The sophomore duo of Ethan Maher and Sam Otis will be looking to make a strong impact on Friday as they gained valuable experience a season ago at the Championship meet.
Making their ACC Championships debut for Pitt will be the freshman trio of Peyton Geehrer, Quintin Gatons and Trey Gannon. Gatons is coming off of his best performance of the season at the Penn State National Open as he posted a personal record time of 27:04.10 while finishing in 45th place overall. Gannon opened his career with a strong 16th place finish at the Yinzer Classic while Geehrer finished right behind him in 18th place.
Unlike the men's squad, the Pitt women's squad will consist of eight underclassmen including just two who have competed in a championship meet in their career, Sadie Carey-Tharp and Olivia Zambrio. Sophomore Emily Brown has put together a strong campaign for the Panthers as she has been Pitt's top finisher in three of the four events including a season-best third place finish at the Yinzer Classic. Mary Borkoski will be looking to make a strong impact after posting a season-best seventh place finish at the RMU Colonial Invitational.
The Panthers will be leaning heavily on a talented group of four freshmen on Friday as Emily Jobes, Sarah Hurst, Winnie Incorvaia and Caroline Rusinski will all be making their first start at the ACC Championships. Expectations are high for Jobes after she posted a 34th place finish (team-best) at the Penn State National Open with a personal record 6K time of 22:10.80. Hurst and Incorvaia have shown steady growth throughout their first season while walk-on Rusinksi has made two appearances including a fifth place showing at the RMU Colonial Invitational.
2020 ACC REWIND
The Pitt men took home 10th place while the Pitt women finished in 14th place last season at the ACC Championships which was hosted in Cary, NC at WakeMed Soccer Park.
Leading the way for the men was Zach Lefever who posted a 39th place finish while Henseler became the highest freshman finisher in program history at the ACC Championships as he took home 44th place with an 8K personal record time of 24:12.7. Higgins and Addison each recorded top-100 finishes, finishing in 88th and 91st place respectively.
On the women's side, senior Ally Brunton led the way as she posted a career-best showing at the Championship meet as she crossed the finish line in 54th place. Carey-Tharp had a strong showing in her first career trip to the ACC's as she posted the 88th place finish while Zambrio also collected the 117th place finish in the strong field.
The next meet for the Panthers will be on Friday, Nov. 12 as they travel to Bethlehem, PA for the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional meet at the Goodman Campus Course on the Lehigh campus.
