The men will kick off the 2020 ACC Championships at 10:00 am as they tackle the 8K course followed by the women's 6K race at 11:00 am. Both races will air live on the ACCNX while ACC Network will air a recap show at 7:00 pm on Monday, Nov. 8.
The top 21 men's and women's finishers at the ACC Championships will earn All-ACC recognition. The first true freshman to cross the finish line in the men's and women's races will be recognized as ACC Freshmen of the Year. ACC Runners of the Year and Coaches of the Year will be determined by a vote of the league's head coaches following completion of the NCAA Championships, which are currently scheduled for next March.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR
The Pitt men will be led by a strong group of upperclassmen along with three who will be making their debut in a conference championship meet on Friday.
Leading the way for the Panthers is graduate transfer Marc Migliozzi who notched a second place finish in Pitt's lone meet this season at Navy. Migliozzi transferred to Pitt after winning the MAC Cross Country individual championship a season ago. Fellow senior Zach Lefever will be looking to make some noise after posting a team-best finish at the Championship meet a season ago while Josh Higgins is poised for a breakout meet in his third ACC Championship meet. Junior Evan Addison will look to improve his 54th place finish at this event a season ago.
Making their ACC Championships debut for Pitt will be the freshman trio of Ethan Maher, Sam Otis and Luke Henseler. Otis earned ACC Freshman of the Week honors earlier this season after a strong 12th place finish at Navy while Maher and Henseler will also be looking to score for the Panthers on Friday.
"For our men's team, it's time to make a statement," stated Brad Herbster. "We have the guys, now it's time to execute and surprise some teams on Friday."
Unlike the men's squad, the Pitt women's squad will consist of five underclassmen and one upperclassmen. Senior Ally Brunton will be leaned upon to lead a youthful but talented Pitt team on Friday as she has posted back-to-back team-best finishes during the Panthers two-meet fall. Last time out, Brunton took home third place with a 5K personal record time against West Virginia. This marks Brunton's third appearance at the conference championship meet and she will look for her best finish in her final attempt.
Lily Robertson will be making her second appearance at the conference championship after posting the third best finish on the squad at this event last season. At the Panther Open, Robertson took home seventh place with a new 5K personal record time.
The Panthers will be leaning heavily on a talented group of four freshman on Friday as Veronica Sanchez, Reagan Flannery, Sadie Carey-Tharp and Olivia Zambrio will all be making their first start at the ACC Championships. Expectations are high for the group after a good showing at the Panther Open where Carey-Tharp led the group with an 11th place finish while Zambrio finished right behind in 13th place overall.
"For the women, it's about improving and racing against a great field of student-athletes," said Herbster. "I am really looking forward to seeing our freshman class step up and make a big impact for us."
2019 ACC REWIND
The Pitt took home 11th place while the Pitt women finished in 14th place last season at the ACC Championships on a sloppy course at Virginia Tech.
Leading the way for the men was Lefever who posted a 38th place finish while Addison notched the 54th place finish in the tough conditions. Higgins was also able to post a top-100 finish as the Panthers posted a team score of 315.
On the women's side, Robertson was the highest returning finisher as she posted a 100th place finish while Brunton crossed the line in 105th place on the flooded course.
The 2020 ACC Championships will mark the final meet of the fall for the Panthers with the NCAA Cross Championships currently scheduled for next March.
