Panthers Open ACC Play Sunday With Notre Dame
WEXFORD, Pa. – The University of Pittsburgh tennis team earned its first win of the season after defeating Youngstown State, 5-2, Friday night at the Oxford Athletic Club.
With the win, the Panthers move to 1-1 on the year, while the Penguins suffer their first loss of the season.
The Panthers got on the board first after clinching the doubles point. The Pitt doubles team of senior Gabriela Rezende and sophomore Claudia Bartolome cruised to a 6-1 win at the No. 1 spot. Soon after, the senior tandem of Natsumi Okamoto and Luisa Varon won 6-4 at No. 2 to give the Panthers the 1-0 advantage entering singles.
Senior Clara Lucas bumped the team score to 2-0 after a quick straight-set win at No. 6 singles. Lucas down Lucias Zagar, 6-0, 6-4.
Sophomore Camila Moreno then turned in the second singles win for Pitt after a straight set win at No. 3. Moreno took down Lisa Khamassi, 6-3, 6-3, to give the Panthers a 3-0 lead.
The Penguins got on the board after recording a win at No. 5 singles. Okamoto fell in three sets to Elvira Esteo. The senior fell 6-2 in the first, bounced back to take the second 6-1, but was blanked in the third, 6-0.
Youngstown State then captured its second and final win at the No. 2 spot as Varon went down 6-4, 7-5.
A win by Rezende at No. 4 singles would clinch the dual for the Panthers, as the senior defeated Cassandra Moraleja. Rezende was blanked in the first set, 6-0, but fought back to win the second and third sets.
The final win of the day came at the No. 1 spot as Bartolome defeated Imaan Hassim in three sets. She dropped the first, 6-1, but battled back to take the second and third, 6-2, 7-5.
The Panthers open ACC play Sunday, Jan. 27 when they host Notre Dame at the Oxford Athletic Club at 12 p.m.
