Panthers Drop ACC Opener to Notre Dame

Pitt Falls to Fighting Irish, 6-1

WEXFORD, Pa. – The University of Pittsburgh tennis team dropped its ACC opener to Notre Dame Sunday afternoon, 6-1, at the Oxford Athletic Club.

With the loss, the Panthers drop to 1-2 on the year and 0-1 against conference foes. The Fighting Irish improve to 3-0 overall and notch their first ACC win of the season.

Sophomore Claudia Bartolome was the lone Panther to earn a win on the day as the 76^th-ranked singles player recorded a straight-set victory at No. 2.

Notre Dame jumped to a 1-0 lead after clinching the doubles point. The Irish recorded back-to-back wins on courts one and two, en route to the advantage.

Moving to singles, Bartolome evened the team score after an impressive win at the No. 2 spot. Bartolome cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win over Bess Waldrum for her second win of the year.

Soon after, Notre Dame recorded wins on courts one and four, to regain the lead 3-1.

Sophomore Camila Moreno then dropped a hard-fought match to Brooke Broda on court three, 2-6, 5-7, as the Irish clinched the dual.

Notre Dame tacked on another team point after senior Natsumi Okamoto fell in straight sets, 1-6, 5-7, on court three.

The Irish added on their sixth and final team point after a win at No. 6 singles. Freshman Mariona Perez Noguera dropped a hard-fought battle to Zoe Taylor. Perez Noguera captured the first set, 7-6 (7-6), dropped the second, 2-6, and fell in the tiebreaker, 1-10.

The Panthers resume action Saturday, Feb. 2 when they host Delaware at 2 p.m. Pitt will then take on the West Virginia Mountaineers Sunday, Feb. 3 at 1 p.m. at the Oxford Athletic Club.
