Panthers Fall 6-1 in University Park
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The University of Pittsburgh tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to the Penn State Nittany Lions Friday night in University Park.
Pitt drops to 0-1 on the year, while Penn State improves to 2-0.
The Nittany Lions struck first, clinching the doubles point. The home team then captured three-straight singles matches to lock up the dual win.
Pitt earned two wins in the season opener, one in doubles and the other in singles. The senior doubles team of Natsumi Okamoto and Luisa Varon evened the doubles win prior to the PSU clinch. Varon also captured a win at No. 2 singles.
"Penn State deserved to win today," said head coach Alex Santos. "At their courts, they came out stronger than us in both doubles and singles. We will work on turning our good things to be better and more consistent."
Penn State got on the board first after clinching the doubles point. The Panthers took the first match at No. 2 doubles as the senior tandem of Natsumi Okamoto and Luisa Varon cruised past Chelsea Sawyer and Frederikke Svarre.
Doubles two and three continued to battle, both trailing 4-5. The Nittany Lions evened things out after a win at No. 3 doubles. The Pitt doubles team of senior Clara Lucas and sophomore Camila Moreno dropped a 4-6 decision.
Senior Gabriela Rezende and sophomore Claudia Bartolome then fell 4-6 at No. 1 singles, as Penn State clinched the doubles point.
Moving to singles, the Nittany Lions recorded three-straight wins at No. 1, No. 4 and No. 3 singles to lock up the team win.
