CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Despite suffering a team loss to No. 1 North Carolina Sunday afternoon, the Pitt doubles team of senior Callie Frey and freshman Camila Moreno concluded their regular season on a high note with a win over the top-ranked doubles team in the nation.
The Panthers fell 6-1 to the Tar Heels and finish the regular season 6-15 overall and 0-14 against ACC opponents. North Carolina improves to 24-3 on the year and 13-2 in conference play.
The Pitt doubles team of Frey and Moreno knocked off their highest ranked opponent in No. 1 Jessie Aney and Alexa Graham, handing the top-ranked doubles team just their sixth loss of the year. The win was the tandems third over a ranked opponent this year, as they previously defeated No. 12 Rosie Johanson and Meghan Kelley of Virginia (March 25) and No. 61 Victoria Flores and Ida Jarlskog of Duke (April 13).
Frey and Moreno finish the regular season 12-7 overall with a 9-4 mark in duals this spring.
"We always talk about overcoming adversity, giving a little more of ourselves and making history," said head coach Alex Santos. "Today, Callie and Camila showed us the way by defeating the No. 1 doubles team in the country on the road. They will always be reminded as the first Pitt tennis players to have a win of this dimension and I couldn't think of a better way for Callie to wrap up her last regular season match in blue and gold."
Freshman Claudia Bartolome got the Panthers on the board for second consecutive dual this weekend. Bartolome defeated No. 82 Jessie Aney for her first career win over a ranked opponent and her 19th singles win of the year.
"In singles, we competed on every single court and I am proud of that," said Santos. "I am also very happy for Claudia for not only proving that she can beat the top players in collegiate tennis, but for doing it on a consistent basis."
North Carolina struck first as the junior doubles team of Natsumi Okamoto and Luisa Varon went down 6-2 on court two.
Frey and Moreno evened the doubles matches as they defeated Aney and Graham 6-2 on court one. The Pitt doubles team led 2-1 early on, and allowed just one more win by the Tar Heels en route to the 6-2 final decision.
North Carolina clinched the doubles point after junior Clara Lucas and Bartolome fell 6-4 on court three.
Moving to singles, the Tar Heels jumped to a 3-0 lead in the dual after collecting wins on courts three and two.
Varon first went down in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2, to No. 83 Alexa Graham, before Moreno fell 6-1, 6-2, to No. 24 Alle Sanford.
North Carolina locked up the team win with a singles victory on court six as Lucas dropped a 6-4, 6-0 decision to Marika Akkerman.
The Panthers fell behind 5-0 in the team race after Rezende fell to No. 11 Makenna Jones on court one, 6-1, 6-4.
The Tar Heels tacked on their final team point after Okamoto dropped a hard-fought battle in the second set, 7-5, after falling 6-1 in the first.
