Panthers Notch First ACC Championship Win in Program History
DURHAM, N.C. – The University of Pittsburgh tennis team earned its first win at the ACC Championship in program history Wednesday afternoon, defeating the No. 10 seed, Boston College, 4-2, at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center on the campus of Duke University.
The match began at 9 a.m. at Cary Tennis Park, but had to be relocated to Duke after play was suspended due to rain.
With the win, the Panthers move to 7-15 on the year and will take on the No. 7 seed Syracuse Thursday, April 26 at 11:30 a.m. at Cary Tennis Park.
Despite dropping the doubles point, the Panthers bounced back in singles thanks to wins from senior Callie Frey, junior Natsumi Okamoto and freshmen Camila Moreno and Claudia Bartolome.
"I am extremely proud of this team," said head coach Alex Santos. "They fought hard throughout the whole season to put themselves in the best position. It is not easy to be here and play the 10-seed. Boston College is confident and a very good team. We were looking for our confidence all season, but we always fought, battled and believed in ourselves. Through our struggles and adversities, today we found what we were looking for."
Boston College struck first in doubles as Bartolome and junior Clara Lucas fell 6-4 at the No. 2 position.
The 40th-ranked Pitt doubles team of Frey and Moreno evened the doubles matches as they recorded their 13th win of the year, 6-4, over Dasha Possokhova and Kylie Wilcox.
The Eagles clinched the doubles point after Okamoto and junior Gabriela Rezende fell 6-2 on court three.
Singles play began at Cary Tennis Park, but was suspended 10:01 a.m. due to rain. Play resumed at 1 p.m. at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center at Duke.
Picking up where they left off, the Panthers wasted no time getting on the board. Moreno made quick work of Boston College's Kylie Wilcox at the No. 2 spot in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, to even the team race, 1-1.
The Eagles regained the lead after Rezende fell, 6-1, 6-4, at the No. 1 spot to No. 76 Asiya Dair.
Frey evened the team score once again as she turned in a straight-set win over Elene Tsokilauri, 6-4, 6-4, on court six. The senior fell behind early on in the first set, trailing 4-2, but worked her way back to take the first set, 6-4. She fell behind again in the second set, tying it 3-3 and 4-4, but outlasted her opponent en route to the 6-4 victory.
Okamoto put the Panthers in front, 3-2, after her Boston College opponent retired in the third set on court five. The junior dropped the first set 6-1 and came back to take the second, 6-2. Okamoto led 3-0 when Maria Ross retired.
Needing just one more win to clinch the dual, it all came down to the freshman on court four.
Bartolome cruised through the first set, 6-2, but BC's Jackie Urbinati put up fight in the second set as the set was tied four times. The freshman outlasted Urbinati, winning two games en route to the 7-5 second set victory and clinching the dual for the Panthers. The win was the 20th overall for Bartolome and her eighth over an ACC opponent this year. Bartolome also improves to 10-3 when playing No. 4 singles.
Junior Luisa Varon was in the third set on court three when play was suspended. Varon dropped the first set 6-1 to Natasha Irani and came back to take the second, 6-2.
The Panthers resume action Wednesday, April 26 at 11:30 a.m. in the second round of the ACC Championship and will face 27th-ranked and seventh-seeded Syracuse Orange.
