Panthers Blanked by No. 4 Blue Devils

Pitt Falls 7-0 to Duke in Final Home Dual
WEXFORD, Pa. – The University of Pittsburgh tennis team was shutout, 7-0, by the fourth-ranked Duke Blue Devils Sunday afternoon at the Oxford Athletic Club.
With the loss, the Panthers fall to 6-13 overall and 0-12 against ACC foes, while the Blue Devils improve to 19-2 on the year and 11-1 in conference play.
Duke jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the dual after clinching the doubles point with wins on courts three and two. The junior doubles team of Natsumi Okamoto and Gabriela Rezende first fell 6-1 on court three before junior Clara Lucas and freshman Claudia Bartolome dropped a 6-2 decision on court two to the eighth-ranked Duke doubles team of Kaitlyn McCarthy and Ellyse Hamlin.
The Blue Devils quickly locked up the dual after straight-set wins on courts one, five and four.
Freshman Camila Moreno looked to force a third set after falling 6-1 in the first, but fell short 7-5 in the second set to No. 78 Meible Chi at the No. 2 position.
Duke jumped to a 6-0 lead after junior Luisa Varon fell short on court three to No. 91 Kaitlyn McCarthy. Varon dropped the first set 6-4 and also attempted to force a third set but dropped the tiebreaker, 7-4.
Okamoto was the final Panther to wrap up action on the day as she battled until the end with Hannah Zhao on court six. The junior fell 6-2 in the opening set and came back to take the second set, 7-5. Okamoto then dropped the third set tiebreaker, 10-5.
Pitt concludes the regular season on the road, beginning with a trip to NC State, Friday, April 20 at 3 p.m. The Panthers final match is slated for Sunday, April 22 at North Carolina at 1 p.m.
