Bartolome Records Lone Win for Panthers
RALEIGH, N.C. – The University of Pittsburgh tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision Friday evening to No. 33 NC State at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
With the loss, the Panthers drop to 6-14 overall and 0-13 against ACC foes. The Wolfpack improve to 16-12 on the year and 7-6 in conference play.
Freshman Claudia Bartolome was the lone Pitt player to record a win on the day. The win was her 18th of the season and is now 4-2 at the No. 4 position.
"In doubles, it was a combination of NC State coming out of the gates strong and us not being at our best," said head coach Alex Santos. "In singles, Claudia showed once again that she came to Pitt to make history."
NC State jumped out to a 1-0 lead after clinching the doubles point. The Panthers team of Bartolome and junior Clara Lucas first fell 6-0 on court two before the junior doubles team of Natsumi Okamoto went down 6-3 on court one.
Freshman Camila Moreno and junior Gabriela Rezende trailed 5-3 on court three before play was suspended.
Moving to singles, the Wolfpack jumped to a 3-0 lead after collecting wins on courts six and two in straight sets.
NC State then locked up the dual with another straight set win on court two.
Varon, Bartolome and Okamoto all forced a third-set tiebreaker, but Bartolome was the lone Panther to come out victorious, 6-3, 3-6, 1-0.
Pitt resumes action Sunday, April 22 for the regular season finale at No. 1 North Carolina.
