Pitt Returns Home Friday, March 10 to Host Morgan State
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The University of Pittsburgh tennis team concluded its trip to Florida Sunday afternoon with a 7-0 loss to No. 23 Florida State at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center.
With the loss, the Panthers move to 5-5 overall and 0-4 in ACC play, while the Seminoles improve to 9-3 on the year and 2-1 against conference foes.
"Today we competed well and for that reason we became a better team," said head coach Alex Santos. "Luisa [Varon] showed that she can go head-to-head against the top girls in college tennis this afternoon."
Florida State jumped to a 1-0 lead in the dual after clinching the doubles point. The Pitt tandem of senior Callie Frey and freshman Camila Moreno suffered a 6-0 shutout at No. 1 doubles as they faced the 48th-ranked team of Petra Hule and Andrea Garcia. The Seminoles clinched the point after the junior duo of Natsumi Okamoto and Luisa Varon fell 6-2 on court two to Carl Touly and Ariana Rahmanparast. Junior Clara Lucas and freshman Claudia Bartolome were down 4-2 on court three before play was halted.
Moving to singles, Moreno stepped in at the No. 1 position and fell 6-1, 6-2, and was followed by Lucas falling by the same score at No. 6 singles.
Florida State locked up the dual after Okamoto was shutout in the first set 6-0 and dropped a hard-fought second set, 6-4, at No. 5 singles to Rahmanparast.
The Panthers then fell behind 5-0 after Frey fell in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, to Julia Mikulski at No. 4. Frey drops to 7-2 in singles on the year with the loss.
Bartolome was the second to last Pitt player to conclude action on the day as she battled with Nandini Das at the No. 3 spot. The freshman dropped the first set 6-2, and fell 6-4 in the second.
Varon was the lone Panther to win a set on the day, as she forced a third set with Hule at the No. 2 spot. Varon came close to capturing the opening set, but fell, 7-5. She bounced back in the second to win the tiebreaker 7-5 and force a third set where she ultimately fell short, 10-6.
