Pitt Finishes Non-Conference Action 6-1
WEXFORD, Pa. – The University of Pittsburgh tennis team returned to the win column Saturday afternoon after defeating Morgan State, 6-1, at the Oxford Athletic Club.
With the win, Pitt improves to 6-5 on the year and concludes non-conference action, 6-1. Morgan State falls to 1-6 on the year with the loss.
The Panthers used the doubles point and five singles wins to defeat the Bears.
Pitt needed to win just one doubles match to clinch the point as Morgan State was unable to field enough players to play three full matches. The Panthers' doubles team of senior Callie Frey and freshman Camila Moreno dropped the first game but came back to win six straight.
Pitt then picked up another team point due to Morgan State only having five players for singles.
Moving to singles, Frey turned in the first win after a dominant performance at the No. 4 position. Frey dropped the first game to Asmara Faluke, but bounced back to win six-straight for a 6-1 win. In the second set, Frey fell behind early again, but posted a 6-3 win en route to her 14th singles victory of the year.
Junior Natsumi Okamoto secured the dual for Pitt after a 6-4, 6-2 win at the No. 5 position. Okamoto and Morgan State's Dana Santiago went back and forth in the first set, as Santiago cut Okamoto's lead to 5-4, but her comeback fell short. Okamoto allowed the second set to get as close as 3-2 and never looked back. Okamoto's win is her 12th of the year and seventh in duals.
Moreno then turned in her second win of the day, this time in singles, as she tacked on the fifth team point after a 7-5, 6-2 win on court two. Moreno and Peggy Rooke were tied numerous times in the first set, but Moreno won three consecutive games to record the win. In the second set, the freshman dropped the first game, but came back to win, 6-2.
Freshman Claudia Bartolome was the final Panther to record a win on the day as she outlasted Oriane Yehouenou in three sets at No. 3 singles. Bartolome shutout Yehouenou, 6-0, in the first set and dropped the second 6-3. She then came back to win the third, 6-0.
Junior Gabriela Rezende was the last Pitt player to finish action as she fell to Danielle Thompson, 1-6, 6-4, 0-1 (7-10), at the No. 1 spot.
The Panthers resume action Friday, March 16 as they host No. 10 Wake Forest in ACC action. Conference play is slated to begin at 4 p.m. at the Oxford Athletic Club.
