
Panthers Drop 5-2 Decision to No. 21 Virginia

Pitt Returns Home Friday, March 30 to Host Syracuse
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Despite clinching the doubles point, the University of Pittsburgh tennis team fell 5-2 to the 21st-ranked Virginia Cavaliers Sunday afternoon.
With the loss, the Panthers drop to 6-8 overall and 0-7 in conference play. The Cavaliers improve to 11-4 overall and 6-2 against ACC foes.
The Panthers clinched the doubles point over an ACC opponent for the first time this season, thanks to a clutch performance by senior Callie Frey and freshman Camila Moreno at the No. 1 spot.
Virginia turned in the first doubles win of the afternoon as the Pitt junior tandem of Natsumi Okamoto and Gabriela Rezende were shutout 6-0 on court two.
Meanwhile on courts one and three, the Panthers never trailed as freshman Claudia Bartolome and junior Clara Lucas cruised to a 6-1 victory on court three to even the doubles matches.
Frey and Moreno led as much as 4-1 when the 12th-ranked doubles team of Rosie Johanson and Meghan Kelley began to chip away, eventually bringing the score to 4-3. The ranked pair would be unable to win any more games as the Panthers pulled away to win it 6-3 and clinch the point. The win was the pairs 10th of the year.
Moving to singles, the Cavaliers got on the board after Rezende fell to Johanson, the 74th-ranked singles player, 6-0, 6-3.
Virginia then took the lead in the dual after Moreno's battle at No. 2 singles fell short, 6-4, 6-0.
The Cavaliers claimed back-to-back singles matches on courts three and four to lock up the dual, 4-1.
Frey was the second to last Panther to conclude action on the day as she fell 6-0, 7-6 on court five.
Okamoto was the lone Pitt player to earn a singles victory on the day and was the last Panther to wrap-up play. The junior improves to 14-9 on the year after UVA's Hunter Bleser retired, giving Okamoto the 7-6(6), 3-2 win.
Pitt returns home Friday, March 30 to host Syracuse at 1 p.m. at the Oxford Athletic Club. Boston College will then make the trip to Pittsburgh Sunday, April 1 for an 11 a.m. conference dual.
