Pitt Opens Weekend with Orange Friday, Closes with Eagles Sunday
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh tennis team is set to host two ACC opponents this weekend in No. 34 Syracuse Friday, March 30, followed by Boston College Sunday, April 1 at the Oxford Athletic Club.
The Panthers (6-8, 0-7 ACC) will face the Orange (12-3, 4-3 ACC) at 1 p.m. Action with the Eagles (10-6, 2-5 ACC) will get underway at 11 a.m.
THE SERIES
- Friday marks the 14th matchup between the Orange and the Panthers with the series in favor of Syracuse, 12-1.
- In their last meeting a year ago, the Orange defeated Pitt, 4-3, on the road.
- Sunday will be the sixth time the Eagles and the Panthers will face each other, with Boston College leading the series, 5-0.
- The two teams last met a year ago in Pittsburgh, which resulted in a 4-3 loss for Pitt.
LAST TIME OUT
- Pitt played two matches last weekend, first at Virginia Tech, Friday, March 23, followed by at No. 21 Virginia, Sunday, March 25.
- The Panthers dropped a 6-1 decision to the Hokies. Pitt's lone win came from freshman Claudia Bartolome after her opponent retired due to injury.
- In Charlottesville, Pitt started the day strong, clinching the doubles point over the 21st-ranked Cavaliers. Senior Callie Frey and freshman Camila Moreno came up clutch as they defeated the 12th-ranked doubles pair of Rosie Johanson and Meghan Kelley.
- However, the Panthers were only able to tack on one more point in singles as junior Natsumi Okamoto picked up a victory after her opponent retired.
SCOUTING THE ORANGE
- Syracuse enters the weekend 12-3 overall with a 4-3 record in the ACC this season.
- In their last time out, the Orange defeated then-ranked No. 48 Louisville, 5-2, Sunday, March 25, at the Drumlins Country Club.
- Junior Gabriela Knutson leads Syracuse with a 9-0 record at the No. 1 spot in singles. Knutson is the ninth-ranked singles player in the latest Oracle/ITA Rankings.
- The doubles team of sophomore Miranda Ramirez and junior Gabriela Knutson are ranked 37th in the nation with a record of 7-1 at the one spot.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
- Boston College will travel to Pittsburgh with an overall record of 10-6 overall and 2-5 in ACC play.
- In their last time out, the Eagles swept their doubleheader, defeating Bryant, 5-0, and Connecticut, 6-1, Sunday, March 25, at the Flynn Complex Tennis Courts.
- Boston College is currently on a four-game winning streak heading into the weekend.
- The Eagles will face Virginia Tech Friday, March 30, before traveling to Pittsburgh to face the Panthers.
A LOOK AT THE PANTHERS
- Pitt holds a 6-3 record at home this season at the Oxford Athletic Club and look to add on to that total with these last five home duals of the season.
- Frey leads the Panthers in singles wins this year with 14 overall. The Pittsburgh native is 5-3 at the No. 5 spot and is 8-5 in duals this spring.
