Pitt Concludes Weekend in Virginia at UVA Sunday, March 25
BLACKSBURG, Va. – The University of Pittsburgh tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to ACC foe Virginia Tech Friday afternoon at Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
With the loss, the Panthers drop to 6-7 on the year and 0-5 in conference play. The Hokies improve to 11-4 overall and 2-4 against ACC opponents.
Virginia Tech clinched the doubles point and recorded five singles wins en route to their second ACC victory. Pitt's lone win came on court three after VT's Elena Cerezo-Condina retired due to injury.
"We need to start focusing on the solutions and in the essence of the game, which is to make one more ball than the opponent," said head coach Alex Santos. "As a freshman, Claudia [Bartolome] keeps doing important things for the program, and as a junior Natsumi [Okamoto] is fully committed to the process. Hopefully that will inspire others."
The Hokies' first doubles win came on court three as the Pitt doubles team of juniors Clara Lucas and Natsumi Okamoto dropped a 6-1 decision. Soon after, freshman Claudia Bartolome and junior Luisa Varon fell 6-2 on court one to give Virginia Tech the 1-0 advantage. Senior Callie Frey and freshman Camila Moreno were up 4-3 on court two when play was halted.
Moving to singles, junior Gabriela Rezende was the first Panther to fall as she dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision to the 66th-ranked No. 1 singles player Natale Novotna.
Virginia Tech took a 3-0 lead in the dual after Moreno went down 6-4, 6-1 on court two to Caroline Daxhelet.
The Hokies locked up the dual soon after as Lucas fell 6-4, 6-3 on court six to Nina Sorkin.
Frey, who was playing No. 4 singles for just the sixth time this year, went down 6-2, 6-2, to Nika Kozar, giving Virginia Tech a 5-0 advantage.
Okamoto and VT's Katherine Butler exchanged leads, but the junior fell short in the first set, 6-4. She then worked her way back in the second set to lead 5-1, but Butler claimed six-straight games to win second set, 7-5.
Bartolome was the final Panther to conclude play Friday afternoon as she picked up a win as her opponent had to retire due to injury. Bartolome dropped the first set to Elena Cerezo-Codina 7-6(6) and was up 4-3 when play was stopped.
The Panthers resume action in Virginia Sunday, March 25 as they head to Charlottesville to take on the 21st-ranked Cavaliers at noon.
