
Panthers Set for Weekend in Virginia

Pitt will travel to Virginia to take on Virginia Tech and No. 21 Virginia
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh tennis team is set for a weekend in the state of Virginia this weekend as the squad faces Virginia Tech Friday, March 23 in Blacksburg, Va., before traveling to Charlottesville to take on No. 21 Virginia Sunday, March 25.
The Panthers (6-6, 0-5 ACC) and Hokies (10-4, 1-4 ACC) will square off at 3 p.m. at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center Friday. Sunday's dual against the 21st-ranked Cavaliers (9-4, 4-2 ACC) is slated to begin at Noon at the Sheridan Snyder Tennis Center.
THE SERIES
- Friday marks the seventh matchup with Virginia Tech as the Hokies lead the series 7-0. The two teams last met a year ago in Pittsburgh which resulted in a 5-2 win for Virginia Tech.
- Sunday afternoon will be the fifth meeting between Virginia and the Panthers, as the Cavaliers lead the series 4-0. The conference foes last met a year ago in Pittsburgh. Pitt dropped a 5-2 decision to the then-ranked 40th Cavalier squad.
LAST TIME OUT
- Pitt dropped a close match to No. 16 Wake Forest, 5-2, Friday, March 16, at the Oxford Athletic Club.
- The Panthers dropped the doubles point after the Demon Deacons recorded back-to-back wins on courts three and two.
- Moving to singles, Wake Forest claimed the first two singles matches on courts two and one before junior Luisa Varon got the Panthers on the board. Varon defeated Chandler Carter at the No. 3 spot, 6-4, 6-3.
- Junior Natsumi Okamoto immediately followed with a win to cut the Demon Deacs lead to 3-2. Okamoto recorded a 6-4, 6-3 win on court six.
- Wake Forest then claimed the remaining two singles matches to capture the dual, 5-2.
SCOUTING THE HOKIES
- Virginia Tech enters the weekend 10-4 overall with a 1-4 record in the ACC this season.
- In their last time out, the Hokies defeated then-ranked No. 49 Louisville, 4-3, Sunday, March 18 for their first ACC win of the year.
- Virginia Tech is by sophomore Natalie Novotna with an 11-3 record at the No. 1 spot in singles. Novotna is the 66th ranked singles player in the latest Oracle/ITA Rankings.
SCOUTING THE CAVALIERS
- No. 21 Virginia will host the Panthers with an overall record of 9-4 overall and 4-2 in ACC play.
- In their last time out, the Cavaliers dominated Notre Dame, 6-1, Sunday, March 18.
- Virginia is led by sophomore Rosie Johanson, who ranks 74th in singles with a 5-4 record at the No. 1 spot.
- The Cavaliers doubles team of junior Meghan Kelley and Rosie Johanson are No. 12 in the country with a 9-2 record at the No. 1 spot.
A LOOK AT THE PANTHERS
- Senior Callie Frey leads the Panthers in singles wins this year with 14 overall. The Pittsburgh native is 5-2 at the No. 5 spot and is 8-3 in duals this spring.
- Frey has also found success in doubles this year, tallying 12 total wins, including six in duals.
- Okamoto has shown major strides this season with 13 overall singles wins, including eight in duals. The Tokyo native is 5-2 when playing the No. 6 position and has won her last two matches.
LOOKING AHEAD
- Pitt returns home Friday, March 30 to host No. 32 Syracuse at 1 p.m. at the Oxford Athletic Club. The Panthers round out the weekend with Boston College, Sunday, April 1 at 11 a.m.
- Pitt has just three home duals remaining including Clemson (April 6), Georgia Tech (April 13) and Duke (April 15).
