Panthers Drop 4-0 Decision to Miami

Pitt Resumes Action Sunday, March 4 at Florida State
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Pittsburgh tennis team dropped a 4-0 decision to the Miami Hurricanes Friday afternoon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center in Coral Gables, Fla.
With the loss, the Panthers move to 5-4 on the year and drop to 0-2 in conference play. The Hurricanes improve to 4-3 overall and pick up their first conference win of the season.
Miami took the lead early on, clinching the doubles point after wins on courts one and three. The Pitt tandem of junior Luisa Varon and freshman Claudia Bartolome dropped a 6-0 decision to the 33rd-ranked doubles team of Estela Perez-Somarriba and Ana Madcur at No. 1. The junior Panther team of Natsumi Okamoto and Gabriela Rezende then fell 6-1 at the No. 3 position to Sinead Lohan and Ulyana Shirokova.
Moving to singles, the Hurricanes captured their first win after freshman Camila Moreno was blanked by No. 116 Lohan, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2 singles.
Rezende then fell to No. 23 Perez-Somarriba, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1 singles, bringing the team score to 3-0 in favor of Miami.
The Hurricanes locked up the dual after senior Callie Frey dropped a 6-1, 6-0 decision to Shirokova at No. 5 singles. The loss snapped Frey's seven-match win streak as she moves to 7-1 on the year in singles.
The Panthers continue action Sunday, March 4 at No. 23 Florida State. Conference play is set to begin at 11 a.m. at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center in Tallahassee, Fla.
