Panthers Continue Road Trip at Miami and Florida State
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh tennis team continues action this weekend on the road, facing Miami Friday, March 2, before traveling to No. 23 Florida State Sunday, March 4.
The Panthers (5-3, 0-2 ACC) take on Miami (3-3, 0-0 ACC) at 10 a.m. at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center in Coral Gables, Fla., followed by clashing with No. 23 Florida State (7-3, 0-1 ACC) at 11 a.m. at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center in Tallahassee, Fla.
THE SERIES
- Friday marks the fifth matchup with Miami in program history as the Hurricanes lead the series, 4-0.
- In their last meeting a year ago, the Panthers dropped a 7-0 decision in Coral Gables.
- Sunday will be the sixth meeting between Pitt and the Seminoles as Florida State leads the series, 5-0.
- The two teams last met a year ago in Pittsburgh, which resulted in a 4-1 loss for the Panthers.
LAST TIME OUT
- The Panthers fell 4-0 at Notre Dame in their first road trip of the year in South Bend, Ind.
- The Fighting Irish clinched the doubles point after wins on courts one and three and used that momentum to pick up three singles wins to lock up the dual.
SCOUTING THE HURRICANES
- In their last time out, the Hurricanes came out victorious, 4-0, over Georgia State Feb. 24.
- Miami is led by sophomore Estela Perez-Somarriba, who is 5-0 in singles, at the No. 1 spot.
- Three Hurricanes are ranked in singles in Perez-Somarriba at No. 23, junior Ana Madcur at No. 114 and senior Sinead Lohan at No. 116.
- Perez-Somarriba and Madcur are No. 33 in doubles this season for Miami.
- Last season the Hurricanes finished 13-12 overall and 8-6 in the ACC, falling to No. 1 Florida, 4-1, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
SCOUTING THE SEMINOLES
- Florida State looks to bounce back after falling in a close battle with Georgia Tech, 4-3, in its first ACC matchup of the season Feb. 25.
- The Seminoles' doubles team of sophomore Andrea Garcia and freshman Petra Hule rank 48th in the nation with a record of 4-2 at the No. 1 spot.
- In singles, Florida State is led by sophomore Carla Touly, who is 4-2 at the No. 1 spot and senior Gabriella Castaneda, who is 6-4 in singles at the No. 3 spot.
- Last season the Seminoles finished 17-12 overall with a 8-8 record in the ACC, falling to No. 11 Auburn, 4-2, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
A LOOK AT THE PANTHERS
- The Panthers are led this season by senior veteran Callie Frey from Pittsburgh, Pa., who is undefeated in singles with a record of 7-0.
- Pitt's success this season also comes from junior Natsumi Okamoto, who is 6-2 in singles, and freshman Claudia Bartolome, who is also undefeated with a record of 6-0.
- The Panthers' doubles team of Frey and Moreno have an impressive record of 5-2 in doubles this season at the No. 2 and 3 spot.
LOOKING AHEAD
- Pitt will host Morgan State on Saturday, March 10 at 1 p.m at the Oxford Athletic Club.
