Varon, Okamoto Record Singles Victories
With this loss, the Panthers drop to 6-6 on the year and 0-5 against conference foes, while Wake Forest improves to 13-4 overall and 2-2 in ACC play.
Juniors Luisa Varon and Natsumi Okamoto were the lone Panthers to win their matches on the day, picking up wins at No. 3 and No. 6, respectively.
The Demon Deacs got on the board first after clinching the doubles point. Wake Forest claimed the first doubles match on court three as the Pitt team of junior Gabriela Rezende and freshman Claudia Bartolome fell 6-1. The Demon Deacons then clinched the doubles point after the junior team of Clara Lucas and Natsumi Okamoto fell in a 6-1 decision on court three.
Moving to singles, Wake Forest took a 2-0 lead after freshman Camila Moreno fell in straight sets 6-1, 6-1, to 88th-ranked Eliza Omirou at No. 2 singles.
The Demon Deacons extended their team lead to 3-0 after Rezende fell 6-3, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot.
Varon then got the Panthers on the board after turning in a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Chandler Carter at the No. 3 spot, bringing the team score to 3-1 in favor of the visiting team.
Pitt tacked on one more point from court six as Okamoto won in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, over Alexis Franco to cut the lead 3-2 in favor of No. 16 Wake Forest.
Frey fell on court five in straight sets 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 to give the Demon Deacons a 4-2 lead over the Panthers.
Wake Forest secured the dual with a win from Anna Ulyashchenko on court four in straight sets 6-4, 7-6 (10-1), against Bartolome to give the Demon Deacons a 5-2 victory.
The Panthers resume action Friday, March 23 when they travel to Virginia Tech at 3 p.m., then take on Virginia Sunday, March 25 at 12 p.m.
