Pitt Drops 4-2 Decision to VCU

Okamoto, Frey Capture Singles Wins in Loss

WEXFORD, Pa. – The University of Pittsburgh tennis team dropped their first match of the year to VCU, 4-2, Saturday afternoon at Oxford Athletic Club.
With the loss, the Panthers drop to 3-1 on the year, while the Rams improve to 3-2.
Pitt fell behind early on as VCU clinched the doubles point.
The Rams claimed the first doubles match on court three as the Panther tandem of junior Natsumi Okamoto and sophomore Jovana Knezevic fell 6-1. VCU clinched the doubles point after junior Luisa Varon and freshman Claudia Bartolome dropped a 6-4 decision at No. 1 doubles.
Moving to singles trailing 1-0 in the dual, senior Callie Frey turned in the first singles win for Pitt to tie it 1-1. Frey defeated Melissa Ifidzhen, 6-4, 6-1, at the No. 4 spot to improve to 4-0 in singles on the year.
The Rams regained the team lead after freshman Camila Moreno fell in straight sets, 7-6 (1), 6-2, at the No. 2 spot to Vanesa Paola Delgado.
VCU tacked on its third team point of the day as Varon fell in a hard-fought battle at the No. 1 position, 6-2, 7-6 (2), to Anna Rasmussen.
Okamoto cut the Rams' lead to 3-2 as she outlasted Kanako Yano, 7-5, 6-3, for her fourth singles win of the year at No. 5.
VCU secured the dual with a win from Sofia Sualehe at No. 6 singles over Knezevic. The sophomore dropped the first set 7-5, bounced back in the second, 6-3, but fell in the third, 6-3, to bring the team score to 4-2 in favor of the Rams.
Bartolome's match was left unfinished at No. 3 singles. The freshman was up 4-1 in the third set, but was unable to finish in time.
The Panthers resume action Saturday, Feb. 10 when they host Eastern Michigan at 2 p.m. before opening ACC play against Louisville. The ACC opener is slated for Sunday, Feb. 11 at 12 p.m. at the Oxford Athletic Club.
