Okamoto, Frey Capture Wins to Stay Undefeated in Singles
WEXFORD, Pa. – The University of Pittsburgh tennis team earned its fourth win of the season after defeating Eastern Michigan, 5-2, Saturday afternoon at the Oxford Athletic Club.
With the victory, the Panthers improve to 4-1 on the year, while the Eagles drop to 2-3.
The Panthers started the day strong, as they clinched the doubles point thanks to wins on courts one and two.
Pitt turned in the first doubles win of the day on court one as the Panther tandem of junior Luisa Varon and freshman Claudia Bartolome recorded a 6-3 victory. Pitt then clinched the doubles point after senior Callie Frey and freshman Camila Moreno won a 6-4 decision at No. 2 doubles.
Moving to singles with a 1-0 advantage, Varon turned in the first singles win to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead.
Frey then defeated Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna, 6-1, 6-1, at the No. 5 spot to improve to 5-0 in singles on the year and extended Pitt's lead to 3-0.
The Eagles got their first point of the day after freshman Camila Moreno fell in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, at the No. 2 spot to Marie Mayerova.
The Panthers tacked on their fourth team point of the day as junior Natsumi Okamoto won in straight sets at the No. 6 position, 6-2, 6-4, to give Pitt a 4-1 lead.
Pitt locked up the dual after a win from Bartolome at No. 4 singles over Andrea Martinovska. The freshman dropped the first set, 6-4, bounced back in the second, 6-3, and secured the point in the third, 6-1, to bring the team score to 5-1 in favor of the Panthers.
Junior Gabriela Rezende fell to Ani Gogvadze, 7-6 (10-1), 6-4, at No. 1 to give the Eagles their second and final point of the day.
The Panthers resume action Sunday, Feb. 11 when they host Louisville at 12 p.m. opening ACC play at the Oxford Athletic Club.
