Panthers Record Third Consecutive Win

WEXFORD, Pa. – The University of Pittsburgh tennis team improved to 3-0 on the year after defeating Bowling Green, 5-2, Friday afternoon at Oxford Athletic Club.
The Panthers have now opened the season with three consecutive wins, after earning wins over Youngstown State and Akron Jan. 20.
Pitt clinched the doubles point for third time this year and added four singles wins en route to the team victory.
In doubles, the junior tandem of Natsumi Okamoto and Clara Lucas turned in the first win of the day, posting a 6-3 victory over Vanesa Pardo and Marta Bettinelli at No. 3 doubles.
Senior Callie Frey and freshman Camila Moreno clinched the doubles point after a 6-2 win at the No. 2 spot, improving to 3-0 in doubles this season.
Moving to singles with a 1-0 lead in the dual, Okamoto came up clutch yet again, turning in the first singles win to put the Panthers ahead 2-0. Okamoto defeated Marta Bettinelli, 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 5 spot to improve to 3-0 in singles this year.
Bowling Green earned its first point of the day at the No. 6 position, where the Falcons' Vanesa Pardo defeated Lucas, 6-3, 6-3.
Frey put Pitt back on track after defeating Ayumi Sasaki in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4, at the No. 4 spot, giving the Panthers a 3-1 lead.
Pitt locked up the dual after junior Luisa Varon outlasted Paula Comella at No. 1 singles. Varon took the first set 6-4 and claimed the second after a hard-fought 12-10 second set tiebreaker.
The Falcons earned their second point of the day in the No. 2 singles matchup, where Polina Radeva defeated Moreno, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4.
The Panthers finished the match the way they started it, capturing another victory at No. 3. Freshman Claudia Bartolome improved to 3-0 in singles play after defeating Marharita Taypash, 6-4, 6-7 (2-7), 10-6, to give Pitt the 5-2 victory over the Falcons.
Pitt will look to continue its hot start to the season when it faces VCU at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3 at Oxford Athletic Club.
