Senior Callie Frey Improves to 7-0 in Singles
WEXFORD, Pa. – The University of Pittsburgh tennis team took down Penn State, 5-2, Sunday afternoon at Oxford Athletic Club.
With the win, the Panthers improve to 5-2 on the year, while the Nittany Lions drop to 4-3.
Pitt used the doubles point and four singles wins to earn the victory.
The Panthers came out of the gates strong, clinching the doubles point after turning in wins on courts two and three.
The Pitt tandem of senior Callie Frey and freshman Camila Moreno recorded the first win at No. 2 doubles, 6-1, before the junior duo of Gabriela Rezende and Natsumi Okamoto posted a 6-4 win on three.
The Panthers moved to singles with a 1-0 advantage over Penn State, however a singles win at No. 1 would tie the dual 1-1 after Rezende fell 6-1, 6-2, to Gabby O'Gorman.
Frey brought the lead back in favor of Pitt as she downed Olivia Rohrbacher, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 5 to improve to 7-0 in singles this season.
The Panthers then claimed three more singles matches to secure the dual.
Okamoto picked up her sixth singles win after downing Bennett Dunn at the No. 6 position, 6-0, 6-1. Junior Luisa Varon soon followed as she recorded a 6-3, 6-2, win over Penn State's Frederikke Svarre at the No. 2 spot. Freshman Claudia Bartolome was the last Panther to turn in a win. Bartolome took down Samantha Smith at the No. 4 spot, 7-6(4), 6-4, to lock up the team win.
The Nittany Lions got their final point of the day after Moreno fell in three sets 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, at the No. 3 position to Shannon Hanley.
Pitt makes its first road trip of the season when it travels to ACC foe Notre Dame Saturday, Feb. 24. Conference action is slated to get underway at 10 a.m. at the Eck Tennis Pavilion.
