Panthers Set for Rivalry Weekend

Pitt to Host Penn State on Sunday Feb. 18
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh tennis team (4-2) continues action with a rivalry home dual this weekend, facing Penn State (4-2) Sunday, Feb. 18 at 11 a.m at the Oxford Athletic Club.
THE SERIES
- Sunday marks the 18th matchup with Penn State in program history, as the Nittany Lions lead the series 15-2.
- The two teams last met a year ago that resulted in a 3-4 victory for Penn State.
LAST TIME OUT
- Pitt split its doubleheader last weekend with a win over Eastern Michigan Saturday, Feb. 10, before dropping its first ACC matchup against Louisville Sunday, Feb. 11.
-Senior Callie Frey and junior Natsumi Okamoto stayed undefeated in dual singles to boost the Panthers to victory over the Eagles, 5-2.
-After failing to clinch the doubles point against Louisville, Pitt rallied to tie the score, 3-3, however, junior Luisa Varon fell short in a close battle to give Louisville the victory, 4-3.
SCOUTING THE NITTANY LIONS
- Penn State makes the short trip to Pittsburgh with a 4-2 overall record.
- In their last time out the Nittany Lions defeated Marshall 5-2.
Senior Bennett Dunn, is off to a hot start this season as she leads Penn State with a 4-1 record in duals at the 4, 5 and 6 spot.
A LOOK AT THE PANTHERS
- Pitt returns a solid group from a year ago including senior Callie Frey, juniors Clara Lucas, Natsumi Okamoto and Gabriela Rezende, as well as sophomore Jovana Knezevic.
- Three Panthers are hitting the courts for the first time this season in freshmen Claudia Bartolome a native of Torredembarra, Spain, and Camila Moreno, a native of Rosario, Argentina. Junior transfer Varon, comes to Pittsburgh from Eastern Florida State College and is a native of Valencia, Venezuela.

- Pitt will meet with five teams currently ranked in the NCAA ITA national rankings, all of which are ACC opponents, including the No. 1 North Carolina, No. 4 Duke, No. 7 Georgia Tech, No. 11 Wake Forest and No. 17 Miami.
LOOKING AHEAD
- Pitt will travel to South Bend, Ind. to face off against Notre Dame Saturday, Feb. 24 at 10 a.m. at Eck Tennis Pavilion.
