Wexford, Pa. – The University of Pittsburgh tennis team opened conference competition with a 4-3 loss to Louisville Sunday afternoon at Oxford Athletic Club.
With the loss, the Panthers drop to 4-2 overall and 0-1 in the ACC, while Louisville improves to 8-1 overall and 2-0 in ACC competition.
Louisville took an early advantage in the match after capturing the doubles point.
The Cardinals claimed their first doubles match on court three, where the Panther tandem of juniors Gabriela Rezende and Natsumi Okamoto fell, 6-1. Louisville later clinched the doubles point after senior Callie Frey and freshman Camila Moreno dropped a 6-3 decision on court two.
Louisville built on its strong start early in singles, capturing wins at the No. 6 and No. 2 spots to take a 3-0 advantage. The Panthers got on the board after Rezende earned a three set win over Aleksandra Mally 1-6, 6-3, 6-1, at the No. 1 spot.
Pitt followed that with two more singles wins in a row, knotting the team score at three apiece. Frey took a three set victory against Raven Neely 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 5 position before freshman Claudia Bartolome defeated Tiffany Huber 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 4 spot to tie the score at three.
The final match of the day was a hard fought battle at the No. 3 position, where Abbie Pahz came out with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory over junior Luisa Varon to give Louisville the 4-3 win.
The Panthers will look for a bounce back effort next Sunday when they face Penn State 11 a.m. at Oxford Athletic Club.
