PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh track and field student-athletes Laila Ismail and Desmond Palmer were named First National Bank Athletes of the Week, announced Tuesday.
Ismail, a junior, recorded a personal-record time of 59.32 en route to her win the 400m hurdles at the Hurricane Alumni Invitational in Miami, Saturday. It was the second individual victory of her college career and her first since she won the same event at the Campbell/Wright Open May 7, 2016. Ismail also aided the Panthers’ winning 4x400m relay team, which posted a season-best time of 3:35.51, alongside Morgan Harvey, Quadaisha Newkirk and Desiree Garland. Their time ranks 16th-best in the nation.
Palmer also achieved success in the 400m hurdles at the Hurricane Alumni Invitational, claiming first place at 49.85. The time moved him into fifth place in the country. In addition to his victory, the senior recorded a top-five finish in the 110m hurdles, placing fourth with a time of 13.97.
Up next, the Panthers’ track and field team will travel to Louisville, Ky., for the Louisville Invitational Friday and Saturday.
