PITTSBURGH – Carlie Leach of lacrosse and Noah Walker of track & field were named the Pitt Student-Athletes of the Week following impressive performances in their respective sports.
Leach provided her veteran scoring presence this week to lead Pitt lacrosse to a win in its final regular season game at home against George Mason, 13-8. In her final game as a Panther at Highmark Stadium, Leach led Pitt with four points on the night, including two goals and two assists. She also added a ground ball. Tuesday’s game was the 15th in a row with a point for the Lake Oswego, Ore., native. Leach goes into postseason play second on the team in goals (28) and third in points (37).
Walker, a senior, continued his strong outdoor campaign this weekend at the Virginia Challenge as he broke his own school record from earlier this year in the hammer throw on Thursday night. Walker opened the event for the Panthers with a huge personal record throw that traveled 218’ (66.64m), breaking his previous school record by more than six feet. His throw earned him third place overall and second among collegiate throwers. The distance is the third best in the ACC so far this season while also being the 14th best in the east region on the year.
Walker then closed out his weekend with another season-best performance, this time in the discus throw as he notched a throw that traveled 180’11” (55.15m). His throw was a season-best distance as he finished in seventh place in the talented field and sixth among collegiate throwers. He currently sits ninth in the ACC in the discus this season.
He currently owns the outdoor school record in the hammer throw, discus and ranks second in program history in the javelin as he has cemented himself as one of the best throwers in program history.
