PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh student-athletes Callie Frey, Camila Moreno, and Greg Lauray were named First National Bank Student-Athletes of the Week, announced Tuesday.
The Pitt tennis doubles team of Frey and Moreno knocked off the No. 1 doubles team in the country Sunday afternoon, as they defeated Jessie Aney and Alexa Graham of No. 1 North Carolina. Frey and Moreno, the 77th-ranked doubles team, handed the Tar Heels doubles team just their sixth loss of the year. The win was their third over a ranked opponent this year, as they previously defeated No. 12 Rosie Johanson and Meghan Kelley of Virginia (March 25) and No. 61 Victoria Flores and Ida Jarlskog of Duke (April 13). Frey and Moreno finish the regular season 12-7 overall with a 9-4 mark in duals this spring.
Lauray, a freshman, reached new heights for Pitt track and field as he tied the program record in men's high jump at the Virginia Classic at Lannigan Field Saturday. The rookie recorded a mark of 2.16m (7'1") and was runner-up in the event behind Tennessee's Darryl Sullivan, who posted the same mark in fewer tries. Lauray's feat had not been achieved in 39 years, since Dan Goodyear set the school standard in 1979.
Pitt tennis enters postseason play Wednesday, April 25, in the opening round of the 2018 ACC Championships. The Panthers will take on Boston College at 9 a.m. in Cary, N.C.
Up next for Pitt track and field are the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa. (April 26-28), and the Ashland Open in Ashland, Ohio (April 27-28).
FIRST NATIONAL BANK
First National Bank is committed to providing financial education to both high school and college students in an effort to better prepare them for a successful financial future.
