Asheville, NC – Pitt's late offensive output, and another strong performance from the pitching staff, powered the Panthers past UNC Asheville on Tuesday night, 8-1.
Aidan Coleman had perhaps the best start of his young career at Greenwood Field on Tuesday night. After surrendering a run in the bottom of the first inning, Coleman did not allow a single Bulldog to cross home over the next five frames. He allowed six hits, one run and no walks in a career-long six innings pitched, earning his first win of the season.
Left-handed reliever, Ethan Firoved, earned his third multi-inning save in just his fourth appearance this year. Firoved struck out five over three innings while surrendering just one hit. He currently holds a 0.68 ERA with 18 strikeouts n his 13.1 innings pitched this season.
Sebastian Pisacreta went 2-3 with two RBIs, two runs scored, two hit-by-pitches and a double. While not starting Tuesday's game, Keeton Burroughs went 1-2 with a run scored and a career-high two RBIs. Luke Cantwell, AJ Nessler, and Lorenzo Carrier each recorded hits as well. Pitt's five hit-by-pitches tied their single-game mark this season.
UNC Asheville scratched a run across the board in the bottom of the first inning, but the Panthers responded immediately with two runs on two hits in the top of the second.
AJ Nessler led off the inning with a single to left field. He advanced to second on a ground out and then to third on a fly ball to deep center field. With two outs, Sebastian Pisacreta drove in Nessler on an RBI double to right center to knot the game at one. Pisacreta moved to third when Jake Kendro reached on an error by the pitcher. Kendro would steal second and advance to third on an errant throw by UNC Asheville's catcher that allowed Pisacreta to score and give Pitt their first lead of the day.
After giving up that run in the bottom of the first inning, Aidan Coleman settled in and threw five-straight scoreless frames. In the longest outing of his career, Coleman had three strikeouts and did not allow a single walk in his six innings.
The Panther offense put up five runs in the top of the eighth inning as they broke this game open late. Pitt loaded the bases with nobody out on a Nessler hit-by-pitch and walks by Zuckerman and Melendez. The Panthers added a pair of runs as Pisacreta and Kendro would each be struck by pitches. Keeton Burroughs bounced into an RBI fielder's choice that drove in Melendez and extended Pitt's lead to four. Pisacreta would score on a Luke Cantwell RBI sacrifice fly to center as he gave Pitt a 6-1 lead in the eighth.
Pitt added one more run in the top of the ninth on a Keeton Burroughs RBI double down the left field line that drove in Sebastian Pisacreta. Burroughs' two RBIs on the night were a career high.
Ethan Firoved started the seventh inning for Pitt and threw three scoreless innings to earn his third multi-inning save in just his fourth appearance this season. The Panthers won Tuesday's contest 8-1.
