Panthers in the Pros Update: 16 Panthers Currently Playing in MLB Organizations

PITTSBURGH – The Pitt baseball program currently has 16 Panthers playing across 12 Major League Baseball organizations. Pitt's recent draft picks Ryan Reed and Luke Cantwell are settling in to their new organization in San Diego, while Logan Evans is looking to help the Seattle Mariners clinch a berth in the postseason.

The Panthers saw both of their 2025 MLB Draft picks be selected by the San Diego Padres in mid-July. Ryan Reed was the first Panther off the board in the 15^th round (460 overall) and Luke Cantwell was taken in the 20^th round (610 overall). The Pitt tandem spent their first month of professional baseball together in Arizona with the ACL Padres. Reed was recently promoted to Single-A Lake Elsinore where he has thrown 2.2 scoreless innings in his two outings. Cantwell has played in five games for High-A Fort Wayne where he has collected five hits and his first professional home run.

Isaac Mattson (2015-17) has shined in the bullpen for the Pittsburgh Pirates since being called up in May earlier this season. The Erie, PA native has been one of Pittsburgh's go-to high-leverage arms in 2025, recording 10 holds and three wins in his 42 appearances. Mattson has struck out 45 batters across his 46 innings of work for his hometown team. Prior to 2025, Mattson made just seven total appearances in his previous two stints in the MLB.

Less than two years after being selected by the Seattle Mariners in the 12^th round of the 2023 MLB Draft, RHP Logan Evans (2022-23) made his MLB debut earlier this year. In his first year at the Major League level, Evans has made 15 starts and earned six wins for the Mariners who are currently in first place of the AL West. The right-hander has a 4.37 ERA with 58 strikeouts over 78.1 innings pitched. Evans is currently on a rehab assignment in Triple-A with the Tacoma Rainiers after suffering an injury in the middle of August.

RHP Phil Fox, the highest draft pick of the Mike Bell Era, was promoted to Double-A (Birmingham Barons) with the Chicago White Sox in early September. The 2024 seventh round draft pick made 44 appearances and earned 11 saves with four holds in High-A earlier this season. In August, Fox earned a save by throwing an immaculate inning against the Asheville Tourists. In his first two appearances in Double-A, Fox has struck out four batters and has not allowed a single run over four innings.

Three organizations in Major League Baseball have multiple Panthers in their pipeline in the New York Yankees (2), San Diego Padres (2) and Tampa Bay Rays (3). Tampa's 2024 seventh round draft pick, Ryan Andrade (2024), is pitching in Single-A for the Charleston River Dogs while RHP Dan Hammer (2017-19) and catcher Tatem Levins (2022) are now battery mates in Double-A with the Montgomery Biscuits.

The Yankees have a pair of right-handed pitchers in Baron Stuart (2022) and Jack Sokol (2023-24) throwing for them. Both Stuart and Sokol were undrafted signees by New York. Stuart was promoted to the Somerset Patriots in Double-A earlier this season. Sokol, who signed with the Yankees last July, is in Single-A with the Tampa Tarpons.
