
Panthers Open ACC Play with a 2-0 Shutout in Raleigh

RALEIGH, NC – The University of Pittsburgh women's soccer team (8-1-0, 1-0 ACC) opens ACC Play at Dial Soccer Stadium with a 2-0 shutout against NC State (1-5-3, 0-1-0 ACC).
Pitt started this afternoon's ACC matchup off strong, dominating the possession of the ball, taking lead in shots. Samiah Phiri started the shots off for Pitt just before the fourth minute. Junior Keera Melenhorst placed a clean shot on goal in the 20th minute but was deflected by NC State's goalkeeper.
The Panthers continued to hold the majority of possession in the first half as the matchup carried on scoreless. With just over 20 seconds left in the first half, junior Ellie Coffield put Pitt on the board first off of Anna Bout's corner kick assist. This late goal led the Panthers into the locker room with a 1-0 lead. Pitt were the leaders in shots (8-2), shots on goal (2-1) and corner kicks (7-1) and tied in saves (1-1) in the first half.
Coming out of the locker room, Ellie Breech posted an impeccable save in the 49th minute to keep the lead for Panthers strong. This afternoon, Breech posted two saves, keeping NC State scoreless.
At the 56th minute, fifth year Amanda West posted her sixth goal of the season after finding an opening between two of the Wolfpack's defenders. Sarah Schupansky earned her fifth assist of the season after sending a quick touch to West to double the lead for Pitt.
The Panthers didn't just dominate this afternoon's matchup in points. Pitt secured a strong 23-7 shots, 10-4 shots on goal and 11-3 corner kicks to complete today's shutout.

The Panthers will travel to Louisville, KY on Thursday, Sept. 21 where they will meet Louisville for an 8 PM first kick.
