PITTSBURGH – The Pitt women's soccer team fell to No. 4 Wake Forest in their home finale Friday night, 2-1. Pitt took the lead in the second half as Sophie Rourke scored a header off a corner kick from Maci Tew. The Deamon Deacons responded with back-to-back goals to earn the road win.
Pitt (7-8-2, 1-7-1 ACC) led Wake Forest in shots after the first 45 minutes. The Panthers took five looks at goal to the Deamon Deacons three. Talyn Guthrie took the first shot of the game for Pitt in the third minute. Guthrie ended the half with four of Pitt's five shots.
Sofia Doheny had a chance to give Pitt the lead in the first minute of the second half. Katie Ellermeyer forced a turnover just outside the 18-yard box. Ellermeyer found Doheny who sent her shot wide of the goal.
Rourke broke the deadlock in the 68th minute. Tew's corner was placed perfectly for Rourke to head in the first goal of her Pitt career.
Wake Forest (13-2-1, 6-2-1 ACC) responded quickly netting the game-tying goal in the 79th minute of action. The Demon Deacons capitalized on a corner finishing a rebound off an initial shot saved by Elli Johnson.
They added another less than a minute later to take a 2-1 lead.
Wake Forest closed out the final 10 minutes without allowing Pitt an opportunity to level the score.
