Pitt Panthers Finish Strong At Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational

South Bend, Ind.- The Pitt cross country men and women finished the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational strong Friday morning in South Bend, Ind. at University of Notre Dame Burke Golf Course with the men's team placing fourteenth while the women took home fourth place.
"The men started the day off strong leading the team competition at the mile, we moved back as the race progressed but a very impressive group that fought hard as a group. Not the result we wanted but some really good things came out of today," stated Brad Herbster.
The men's squad placed fourteenth with 339 points, and the women finished in fourth place securing fourth place.
In the men's 5 mile race, Jack Miller placed 32nd with a time of 23:59.9, Luke Henseler took home 39th with a time of 24:06.6, Sam Otis placed 58th with a time of 24:16.0 Luke Miller secured 99th with a time of 24:40.3, and Peyton Geehrer finished in 119th place with a time of 24:52.5.
"Jack Miller put himself in the front group, Luke Henseler, and of course Sam Otis keeping the gap closed. Luke Miller and Peyton fought hard to secure 4 and 5 spots. This was the highest we have finished at Notre Dame Last year on this course we averaged 24:56 today we were faster on avg 24:23 by 33 seconds. Big things can happen for this group and in two weeks we can grow more," continued Herbster
In the women's 5000m race, Emily Brown led the panthers finishing in 11th with a time of 17:25.2, Sadie Carey-Tharp took home 15th place with a time of 17:33.3, Caroline Rusinski finished in 27th place with a time of 17:49.4, Winnie Incorvaia came in 43rd place with a time of 18.09.4, and Gianna Cagliola placed 60th with a time of 18:31.4.
"Much like the men a massive improvement from last week, the women averaged 18:35 and this year 17:53 and moved up 11 spots. Led by Emily Brown and Sadie Carey it was good to see them work together. Baker got out well as did Winnie. Rusinski ran tough at the end. Gianna stepped into scoring position and helped the team" stated Herbster.

Following this meet the Panthers will head to Stillwater, Okla. for the Weis- Crockett Invitational in two weeks.
