PITTSBURGH - Jack Miller and Luke Henseler became the first Panther duo to punch their tickets to the NCAA Cross Country Championships. The duo will represent the Panthers on the national stage in Stillwater, OK on Saturday, Nov. 19.
For the first time in program history, Pitt will have two runners in the NCAA Cross Country Championship field while Miller and Henseler also become the first Pitt male runners to qualify for the NCCA Championships overall since 1994 (Mike Umbleby).
The duo had a huge showing at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional meet on Friday as Miller secured the best finish by a Pitt male at the meet as he crossed the finish line in seventh place in 30:11.20. Henseler posted the best race of his young career to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships as he crossed the line in 13th place with a time of 30:18.70.
"Making this meet is never easy and to have two Panthers competing next Saturday is a testament to their hard work and determination," stated coach Brad Herbster. "There were a couple of moments in the regional race that they could have slowed down but they trusted their fitness and believed they could make it and kept pushing and focused on competing at a high level."
Overall, the men's cross country squad posted a fifth place finish at the Mid-Atlantic Regional meet which tied last seasons showing for the best team finish in program history. The Panthers team score of 127 points also marked the best in program history at the regional meet, besting last seasons total of 157.
The 2022 NCAA Cross Country Championships will be run at the Greiner Family Oklahoma State Cross Country Course in Stillwater, a course both Miller and Henseler competed on earlier this season at the Weis-Crockett Invitational hosted by Oklahoma State.
