CLINTON, PA – For the second time in as many weeks, the Pitt women's cross country squad competed at the Youthtowne course in Clinton, PA on Friday evening and this time they were able to claim the team victory at the RMU Colonial Invitational. Emily Brown led the way for Pitt as she posted a fourth place finish in the women's 6K race.
"In tough conditions, the women held together and performed as a unit," said cross country coach Brad Herbster. "Getting their first win of the season is important and it was good seeing Mary Borkoski and Caroline Rusinski get in the race and compete. Emily Brown once again led the squad but Sarah Hurst really improved race position from the start of the race to the end."
The women posted a team score of 36 on Friday as they had four runners finish inside the top-10 for the first time this season. Pitt finished ahead of Carnegie Mellon (49), Northern Kentucky (51) and Duquesne (104) for their first victory of the young season.
For the second straight meet, sophomore Emily Brown paced the Panthers as she collected a fourth place finish in 23:59.90. Appearing in her first career cross country race, freshman Caroline Rusinski finished right behind Brown in fifth place as she crossed the finish line in 24:03.90 while Mary Borkoski made her season debut with a seventh place finish in 24:07.30.
The next five finishers were all freshmen for the Panthers as Sarah Hurst posted an eighth place finish in 24:10.70 while Winnie Incorvaia took home 12th place, Emily Jobes placed 14th, Abby Michalec finished in 24th and Mia Ingalls crossed in 28th place overall.
Former Pitt standout and current volunteer assistant coach Nick Wolk competed in the men's 8K race unattached and he posted a second place finish in 25:48.30.
The Pitt men and women will return to action on Friday, October 1 as they head to South Bend for the Joe Piane Invitational hosted by Notre Dame.
