PITTSBURGH - South Bend, Indiana marks Pitt cross country's next destination as Notre Dame's Burke Golf Course will host the Joe Piane – Notre Dame Invitational this Friday. The trip to Indiana marks the Panthers' first journey out of state in the 2021 campaign and one of two trips the program will make to the Notre Dame course over the next month.
The men will lead off the competition for Pitt, taking part in the 8K Blue Race at 11:15 am. Shortly after, the women will have their go at the 5K course in the Gold Race, set to take place at 1:30 pm. For spectators, parking will be located just north of Burke Golf Course on Door Road in Lots D6 North and South.
On the men's side, Pitt is one of 23 teams competing in the Blue Race which features 10 teams ranked inside the top-30 in the nation and four others receiving votes. The host Notre Dame Fighting Irish are currently ranked #2 while Butler (#10), Alabama (#15), Ole Miss (#18), Furman (#19) and Michigan (#25) all reside in the top-25. The women's Gold Race will involve 24 schools including ACC foe Clemson along with Ohio State and Northwestern of the Big Ten.
The Panthers opened their 2021 campaign just under a month ago as they co-hosted the Yinzer Classic at Youthtowne. The Pitt men claimed the team title while the women took second behind Duquesne. Jack Miller led the men's team, taking home the first individual victory of his Pitt career in the 6K with a time of 18:47.50 while senior Evan Addison took third place and Luke Henseler finished in fifth. On the women's side, Emily Brown led the way as she claimed third place while freshman Emily Jobes and Olivia Zambrio also posted top-12 finishes.
More recently, the Pitt women made a return to the course at Youthtowne for the RMU Colonial Invitational. Their second and final race at home this season saw the women claim the team title this time around in the field of seven squads.
Brown led all Pitt finishers for the second straight race as she finished in fourth place. Even in tough the conditions, Pitt had four runners finish inside the top-10, including freshman Caroline Rusinski who made her collegiate debut with a fifth place finish, Mary Borkoski who posted a seventh place finish and Sarah Hurst who came in eighth.
Following Friday's meet in South Bend, the Panthers will return to the state of Pennsylvania for a tough test at the Penn State National Open on Friday, Oct. 15.
