PITTSBURGH – Highlighted by a pair of meets in their hometown, the Pitt men's and women's cross country teams revealed their 2021 schedule Tuesday afternoon, as announced by head coach Alonzo Webb.
"After a COVID shortened cross country season last year, I'm looking forward to getting back to normal," said head coach Alonzo Webb. "I'm excited to kick off our season with a local meet, dubbed the Yinzer Classic in Clinton, PA, paying homage to the typical blue-collar people from the Pittsburgh region who often spoke with a heavy Pittsburghese accent."
The Panthers 2021 campaign will open up on Friday, September 3 with the Yinzer Classic at Youthtowne in Clinton, PA. The Yinzer Classic will be co-hosted by Pitt, Robert Morris, Duquesne and Carnegie Mellon and will be free and open to the public. The women's race will begin at 6:00 pm followed by the men's race at 6:30 pm.
Two weeks later, the Panthers will be returning to Youthtowne for a meet against local foe Robert Morris on Friday, September 17. Pitt will then hit the road for their first road meet of the season on Friday, October 1 as they head to South Bend, IN for the Notre Dame Invitational.
Pitt wraps up their 2021 regular season on Friday, October 15 as they head to Penn State for the PSU National Open at the Blue-White Golf Course in University Park, PA. The women's 6K race is set to begin at 10:45 am followed by the men's 5.2 mile race at 11:30 am.
The 2021 ACC XC Championships will take place on Friday, October 29 in Notre Dame at the Notre Dame Golf Course. Pitt will be looking to improve on their finishes a season ago, men (10th) & women (14th). After not competing in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional last season due to Covid-19, Pitt will look to make some noise at the meet on Friday, November 12 in Bethlehem, PA at the Goodman Course.
The season will conclude on Friday, November 20 in Tallahassee with the 2021 NCAA Cross Country Championships hosted by Florida State at the Apalachee Regional Park course.
The Pitt men return seven letter winners from a season ago including Josh Higgins, Evan Addison, Luke Henseler, Sam Otis and Ethan Maher who all ran in the 2020 ACC Championships for the Panthers. Henseler closed out his first season with an impressive showing at the conference meet as he finished 44th overall while the freshman duo of Otis and Maher gained some good experience and will be leaned on a bit more this season. Jack Miller will return for the Panthers after not competing in a meet last season. Pitt will also welcome five newcomers to the squad who will set their sights on making a strong first impression at the collegiate level.
"Our men's team is a little more established, with upperclassmen Miller, Higgins and Henseler being three of our top contributors, and Otis playing a large part as well," stated Webb.
On the women's side, the Panthers will return 14 athletes from a season ago including five, Sadie Carey-Tharp, Lily Robertson, Olivia Zambrio, Reagan Flannery and Veronica Sanchez, who competed in the ACC Championships a season ago. Carey-Tharp had the highest finish at the conference meet of any of the Pitt returners while sophomore Emily Brown will also be leaned on heavily this season. Pitt will also welcome eight newcomers who will be looking to make an immediate impact for the 2021 campaign.
"On the women's side of things we are looking for Brown and Carey-Tharp to be significant performers for us this year," stated Webb. "Each year there is a surprise or two from our incoming freshmen and Ellen Baker and Sarah Hurst are two that could be contributors for us right away."
