HANOVER, NH – The Pitt women's soccer team dropped their first match of the 2019 campaign on Friday afternoon as the Dartmouth Big Green secured the 2-1 victory over the Panthers at home. Freshman forward Amanda West netted her fifth goal of the season in the defeat.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Big Green were able to record the first shot on frame of the first half in the fifth minute as Erin Kawakami took a hard shot but Amaia Pena was up to the test making the stop.
After some back-and-forth play over the next 30 minutes of the opening half, the Big Green got on the board first in the 38^th minute as Tracey Mills beat Pena to the upper corner from just outside the 18-yard box, giving the home side the 1-0 lead.
The Panthers wasted no time tying up the game in the beginning of the second half as Juliana Vazquez sent a great corner kick into the box where Amanda West finished off her fifth goal of the season in the 46^th minute of play.
West had a chance to add the go-ahead goal in the 51^st minute but her hard attempt was stopped by Mariel Gordon to keep the match knotted, 1-1.
Dartmouth came right back and took the 2-1 lead in the 61^st minute as Izzy Glennon buried her first of the season after a nice pass from Zoe Boocock.
Freshman Ava Hanna had a hard shot from distance in the 65^th minute that was stopped by the Dartmouth goalkeeper as she went down to a knee to preserve the 2-1 lead.
After some tough defensive play by both sides, the Panthers had their final chance to draw even in the 87^th minute of play but Anna Rico's shot attempt sailed wide of the Dartmouth goal as the Big Green secured the 2-1 win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

The loss marked the Panthers first defeat of the 2019 campaign.
The win for Dartmouth gives them the 1-0-0 all-time series record against the Panthers.
Dartmouth held the 10-5 edge in shots including the slim 4-3 advantage in shots on goal. The Big Green also owned the 6-1 lead in corner kicks in the win.
Freshman Amanda West got on the scoreboard for the third straight match as she buried her fifth goal of the season in the second half. West becomes the first Panther to score five goals in a season since Alex Charlebois in 2012.
West leads the Panthers with five goals, one assist and 11 points on the year.
In goal, Mariel Gordon finished with two saves in the win while Amaia Pena made two stops in the defeat.

QUOTEABLE

Head Coach Randy Waldrum: "I felt like we came out a bit lethargic today. Dartmouth was very organized and moved us around the park a bit. We had moments but couldn't put things together offensively. The second half we came out much better. We showed some character again with the early goal. We were much more pleased with the second half. I like where this young team is headed and proud of the effort they displayed. On to Sunday's game against a strong UMass team."

The Panthers will stay on the road for their final match of a three-match road swing on Sunday afternoon as they head to Amherst, MA to take on UMass at 1:00 pm.
