Women's Soccer Falls At UMass On Sunday, 2-1

AMHERST, MA – The Pitt women's soccer team put together a very strong road effort on Sunday afternoon but a goal in the 86th minute by UMass lifted the Minutewomen past the Panthers, 2-1. Freshman forward Amanda West scored her sixth goal of the season as she becomes the first Pitt freshman to score a goal in four straight matches to open her career.

- In the 13th minute, Krystyna Rytel had a shot from distance that skipped just to the left of the UMass go
- UMass had the best chance of the early going in the 16th minute as Kelly Marra ripped a shot off the cross bar but the Panthers were able to clear the ball away to preserve the 0-0 tie.
- Anna Bout had a good scoring chance from just outside the 18-yard box in the 18th minute but her hard low shot was stopped by the diving UMass keeper.
- Katherine Robinson made her first save of the opening half in the 20th minute as she made a jumping stop after a header attempt by Serena Ahmed.
- In the 36th minute, Amanda West cut into the box and ripped a right-footed shot towards the upper corner of the net but soared just over the cross bar and out of play.
- Pitt came out strong in the second half as Juliana Vazquez had a great chance from just inside the box but her attempt was stopped by the diving UMass keeper.
- A minute later, Sydney Marasco had a scoring opportunity but her right-footed shot was saved by Peyton Ryan to keep the game scoreless in the 47th minute.
- West recorded two straight shots from distance in the 48th minute as she forced Ryan to make back-to-back diving stops to her right.
- The Panthers had their best chance of the second half in the 55th minute as freshman Sydney Marasco ripped a hard bending shot off the left goal post and the rebound was cleared by the UMass defense.
- The Minutewomen broke the scoreless match in the 58th minute as Rebeca Frisk took an errant Pitt pass and fed Melissa Kossler who beat Robinson to the right corner to give UMass the 1-0 lead.
- Marasco had a fabulous scoring chance in the 67th minute after Anna Rico forced an UMass turnover. Rico crossed the ball to Marasco who was one-on-one with the UMass keeper who made a huge diving stop to help maintain the 1-0 lead for the home team.
- The Panthers finally broke through with the tying goal in the 80th minute as Amanda West drew a penalty inside the box to earn a penalty kick. On the ensuing penalty kick, West beat the UMass keeper to the left corner for her sixth goal of the season, tying the match 1-1.
- The Minutewomen came right back and netted what would be the game-winner in the 86th minute as Ansley Frazier crossed the ball into the box where Melissa Kossler came flying in and headed home the goal to take the 2-1 lead.
- With the loss, the Panthers are now 14-14-0 all-time against Atlantic 10 opponents.
- UMass now owns the 1-0-0 all-time series record against Pitt.
- Freshman Amanda West continued her strong start to her career as she netted the lone goal for the Panthers on the penalty kick in the 80th minute.
- West becomes the first Pitt player in program history to open her career with goals in each of her first four matches. On the year, West leads the squad with six goals, one assist and 13 points. Her six goals are the most in a single season by a Pitt player since Taylor Pryce scored six goals in 2015.
- The Panthers held the dominant 16-9 edge in shots and the 4-1 edge in corner kicks in the loss.
- West led the Panthers with six shots, three on goal, while Sydney Marasco notched three shots, two on goal, and Anna Bout finished off her game with two shots.
- In goal, Katherine Robinson made her first start of the season and finished with two saves.
- Today's starting lineup was the fourth different starting XI the Panthers have used through four games this season.
- Head Coach Randy Waldrum: "I am really disappointed for our team because we played well today. I thought for most of the game we were the better team. We are young and have to learn how to put our chances away and how to manage the game late. I love our improvement and the fighting spirit. We will grow from this."
- The Panthers will now return home for three straight matches starting on Friday, September 6 as they welcome Rhode Island to Ambrose Urbanic Field at 5:00 pm. Friday night's match will serve as the Panthers Senior Day as they will honor Juliana Vazquez, Cheyenne Hudson and Amaia Pena prior to the match.
