PITTSBURGH – Pitt women's basketball guard Aysia Bugg has been granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA, as announced on Thursday afternoon by head coach Lance White. Bugg is now cleared by the NCAA to compete for the Panthers during the 2019-20 campaign.
"We are so excited for Aysia that the NCAA granted her a sixth year of eligibility," said head coach Lance White. "She is such an outstanding representative for Pitt women's basketball and I know this is an opportunity Aysia will not take for granted. Aysia is a tremendous player and leader who we will lean on this season to guide this young and talented squad."
Bugg has been cleared by the NCAA but will still need to be cleared by the University of Pittsburgh medical staff before returning to the court after seeing her 2018-19 campaign cut short due to blood clots.
"Receiving another year means the world to me," stated Bugg. "Not only do I get the chance to play a full year for such a great staff, but I get the opportunity to play the sport I love while representing an amazing University. I am truly blessed to be here today, and it's the support from my coaches, teammates and family that made this process so much easier. I am so grateful, and with God in charge, I fear nothing. I can't wait to see what he has in store for me next."
The Chicago, IL native was enjoying the best season of her Pitt career last season before missing the final 26 games of the season due to blood clots. The crafty guard was averaging a career-high and team-leading 14.0 points, 3.4 assists and 2.4 rebounds across 29.6 minutes/game before being sidelined for the remainder of the season. She had a pair of 20-point games through her first five contests while also connecting on nine triples.
Prior to missing the entire 2017-18 campaign with a torn ACL, Bugg was a consistent performer for the Panthers at the point. She had her best collegiate season as a sophomore as she averaged 29.9 minutes, 7.8 points, 3.8 assists and 2.0 rebounds while netting 31 triples and starting all 31 games for the Panthers.
Bugg has enjoyed a strong career at Pitt as she has accumulated 713 points, 308 assists, 209 rebounds and 67 steals while connecting on 60 three-pointers and making 92 career starts in the gold and blue.
Bugg and Jasmine Whitney will be the lone seniors on the Panthers young and talented roster for next season as Pitt will be welcoming seven newcomers for the 2019-20 campaign.
