Pitt Set to Open 2025-26 Campaign; Hosts Drexel Tuesday

PITTSBURGH – The Pitt women's basketball team opens up the 2025-26 campaign Tuesday evening, hosting in-state foe Drexel at the Petersen Events Center.
Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m., and the game can be streamed via ACCNX.

The Opening Tip
- Senior guard Angel Jones scored a game-high 23 points on 11-of-13 shooting to lead Pitt to a 98-58 victory in the preseason finale Thursday evening at the Petersen Events Center.
	
- Redshirt junior guard Mikayla Johnson posted a double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds.
 - Pitt shot 56.2 percent (41-for-73) from the field and 50 percent (6-for-12) from three-point range.
 
 - The Panthers previously earned a 101-46 victory over Pitt-Johnstown to open exhibition play.
 - Junior transfer Carla Viegas powered the Panthers in the second half, scoring 11 of her team-high 17 points in the fourth quarter. 
	
- She went 5-for-6 from three-point range, knocking down back-to-back triples to cap her performance.
 
 - Freshman guard Nylah Wilson added 15 points and led the team with four assists, while Johnson also chipped in 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field.
 - Four players return from last year's roster, led by Johnson, who averaged 10.9 points and 4.1 rebounds per game.
 - Last season featured several highlights for the Panthers, including the largest regulation comeback in NCAA history against SMU (Jan. 12). 
	
- Pitt also posted its highest win total (13) since 2016-17 and recorded its second-most ACC victories (5) since joining the league.
 
 - The 2025-26 roster features seven freshmen, headlined by ESPNW HoopGurlz Top 100 recruits Wilson (No. 30, five-star) and Hagans Jr. (No. 99, four-star). 
	
- Pitt also welcomed three transfers this offseason: Viegas (Florida State), Fatima Diakhate (Georgia) and Jones (Coppin State).
 
 
Series History 
- Tuesday will mark the third meeting between Pitt and Drexel, with the series knotted at 1-1.
 - A win would give the Panthers a 2-1 series edge over the Dragons.
 
Scouting the Dragons
- In 2024-25, Drexel went 17-13 and 12-6 in conference play.
 - The Dragons lost in the semifinals of the CAA Championship to William & Mary by a score of 76-54.
