
Panthers Fall to Mountaineers

Pitt Resumes Action Thursday, Feb. 7 with Akron
WEXFORD, Pa. – The University of Pittsburgh tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to West Virginia Sunday afternoon at the Oxford Athletic Club.
With the loss, the Panthers drop to 2-3 on the year, while the Mountaineers improve to 2-0.
Sophomore Claudia Bartolome and senior Gabriela Rezende were the lone Panthers to record singles wins on the day. Bartolome and Rezende also recorded a win together in doubles play.
West Virginia got on the board first after clinching the doubles point. The Mountaineers turned in the first doubles win of the day as the Pitt doubles team of senior Clara Lucas and sophomore Camila Moreno dropped a 6-3 decision on court three.
Soon after, Rezende and Bartolome turned in a 6-4 win at the No. 1 spot to even the doubles matches.
The senior tandem of Natsumi Okamoto and Luisa Varon battled back from a 4-2 deficit to tie it 6-6 on court two. The pair ultimately fell short in the tiebreaker, 5-7.
Moving to singles, WVU took a 2-1 lead in the team race after Varon dropped a 1-6, 3-6, decision at the No. 1 spot.
Bartolome continued her winning ways this afternoon, picking up a 7-5, 6-3, win at No. 2 singles. The win was her 10th of the year and is now 3-0 at the No. 2 position.
The Mountaineers then collected back-to-back wins on courts three and four to secure the dual, 4-1. Moreno dropped a hard-fought three set match to Nicole Roc at No. 3. The sophomore took the first set 7-5, but then went down 1-6, 0-6.
Freshman Mariona Perez Noguera also dropped a close match, this one coming at No. 6 singles. Perez Noguera fell 5-7, 4-6, to Giovanna Caputo.
West Virginia added its fifth point of the dual after Okamoto fell in three sets to Anastasia Bovolskaia at No. 4 singles. Okamoto took the first set, 6-4, but dropped the second and third, 1-6, 3-6.
Rezende was the final Panther to conclude action on the day. The senior added Pitt's second point in the dual as she outlasted Anne-Sophie Courteau, 7-5, 1-6, 6-4, at No. 5 singles.
The Panthers resume action Thursday, Feb. 7 when they host Akron at 8:30 p.m. at the Oxford Athletic Club.
