Pitt Resumes Action Friday, March 1 vs. Miami
ATLANTA – The University of Pittsburgh tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to No. 31 Georgia Tech Sunday afternoon at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex.
With the loss, the Panthers drop to 4-6 overall and 0-4 against ACC foes. The Yellow Jackets move to 4-4 overall and pick up their first ACC win.
"I am proud of the way we competed today and we definitely have to continue in this line of work, discipline and toughness," said head coach Alex Santos. "I think we adapted very well to the conditions with playing outdoors for the first time this season. In multiple courts, it came down to the important points where Georgia Tech was better than us."
Georgia Tech earned the doubles point after back-to-back wins on courts one and three. The Pitt doubles team of senior Gabriela Rezende and sophomore Claudia Bartolome first fell 4-6 at No. 1 before senior Clara Lucas and sophomore Camila Moreno fell by the same score on court three.
Moving to singles, the Yellow Jackets picked up their first win at No. 4 as Rezende dropped a straight-set decision, 1-6, 3-6, to Victoria Flores.
Soon after, 99th-ranked Bartolome went down 5-7, 2-6 to No. 24 Kenya Jones at No. 1 singles.
Georgia Tech clinched the dual with a win on court three, as Moreno fell to Valeriya Deminova, 4-6, 0-6.
Freshman Mariona Perez Noguera had a strong showing this afternoon, as she captured the first set at No. 5 singles over Gia Cohen, 6-2. Perez Noguera then dropped the second and third sets, 1-6, 3-6.
The remaining two matches were close, forcing a super tiebreak on courts two and six. Senior Luisa Varon outlasted Nami Otsuka in the opening set, 7-6 (7-5), but dropped the second, 3-6, and the tiebreaker, 6-10.
The Jackets collected their final win on court six as senior Natsumi Okamoto dropped a hard-fought battle to Nadia Gizdova. Okamoto dropped the opening set, 3-6, won the second, 7-5, but fell in the tiebreaker, 8-10.
The Panthers resume action next weekend with a pair of ACC matches, first hosting No. 18 Miami Friday, March 1 at 1 p.m. before taking on No. 12 Florida State Sunday, March 3 at 11 a.m.
