Panthers Resume Action Sunday, March 3 with No. 15 Florida State
WEXFORD, Pa. – The University of Pittsburgh tennis team fell 5-2 to No. 19 Miami Friday afternoon at the Oxford Athletic Club.
With the loss, the Panthers drop to 4-7 overall and 0-5 in conference play. The ranked Hurricanes improve to 7-3 and pick up their first ACC win to move to 1-2.
Pitt's two wins of the day came from freshman Mariana Perez Noguera and sophomore Claudia Bartolome. Both were the final singles matches to conclude action.
Miami got on the board first, clinching the doubles point after recording back-to-back wins on courts three and two. However, the Pitt doubles team of seniors Natsumi Okamoto and Luisa Varon put up a fight on court two as the match was tied 4-4 before the Hurricanes won two straight to clinch the point. As Miami went up 5-4 on court two, the Panther tandem of senior Gabriela Rezende and Bartolome went up 5-3 on court one. The pair finished with a 5-4 lead.
Moving to singles, the Hurricanes quickly went to work as they captured first set wins on all courts except No. 2, which saw Bartolome pick up a 6-4 win over Daniella Roldan.
Miami then recorded wins on courts six and five, before locking up the dual, 4-0, with a victory on one as Varon fell to seventh-ranked Estela Perez-Somarriba.
The Hurricanes added their fifth and final team point after Rezende dropped a 2-6, 3-6 decision on court three.
Perez Noguera then got the Panthers on the board after recording her first ACC win and her first at No. 4 singles. The freshman dropped the first set, 3-6, but bounced back to take the second, 6-4, and won the tiebreaker, 10-4.
Bartolome put up the final team point of the day with a win at No. 2 singles. The 99th-ranked singles player won the first set, 6-4, and fell short in the second set tiebreaker, 6-8. Bartolome then came back to outlast Daniella Roldan, 10-5, in the tiebreaker for her 13th win of the year and third ACC victory.
