Pitt Tennis to Debut Alternate Retro Uniforms
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh tennis team is set to host Delaware and West Virginia at the Oxford Athletic Club in Wexford, Pa., this weekend. Saturday's match will feature the Panthers' alternate retro uniforms as part of Pitt's Retro Weekend.
The Panthers (1-2, 0-1 ACC) and the Hens (1-3, 0-0 CAA) will face off at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2. Pitt then returns to Wexford Sunday, Feb. 3 at 1 p.m. to meet the Mountaineers (0-0, 0-0 Big 12).

LAST TIME OUT
- Pitt recorded a victory in its home opener against Youngstown State Friday, Jan. 25, 5-2.
- The Panthers earned an early advantage after clinching the doubles point with consecutive wins at No. 1 and No. 2. The doubles duo of senior Gabriela Rezende and sophomore Claudia Bartolome turned in the first win, 6-1, at the No. 1 spot. Shortly after, seniors Natsumi Okamoto and Luisa Varon won 6-4 at No. 2, to give the Panthers the advantage entering singles.
- Early in singles, senior Clara Lucas and sophomore Camila Moreno recorded the first two singles wins at No. 6 and No. 3, respectively, giving the Panthers a 3-0 lead in the team race.
- Rezende ultimately clinched the dual for Pitt after fighting through three tough sets at No. 4.
- Pitt faced its first ACC opponent in Notre Dame Sunday, Jan. 27, and dropped a 6-1 decision.
- Bartolome, who ranks No. 76 in singles, recorded the lone win for the Panthers as she cruised to a 6-2, 6-2, victory at the No. 2 spot.
THE SERIES
- The Panthers and Blue Hens clash for just the second time in program history. The two teams last met in 1981.
- Pitt and West Virginia meet for the 37th time on Sunday. The Mountaineers lead the all-time series 7-29 with the Panthers claiming the last three meetings.
- Sunday's dual will be the first meeting between the rivals since the 2017 season.
SCOUTING THE BLUE HENS
- In their last time out, the Blue Hens dropped back-to-back duals to Seton Hall (Jan. 26), 4-1, and Rutgers (Jan. 25), 7-0.
- Delaware is led by freshman Viva Laas at the No. 1 spot in singles, with a 6-12 overall record.
- Junior Sarah Hall, a returning ITA Regionals competitor in singles and doubles from a year ago, is 8-9 overall this year and has seen action at the No. 2 and 3 positions in singles in 2019.
- The Blue Hens finished the 2018 season 12-6 overall with a 3-1 mark against CAA opponents. Delaware concluded the regular season on a seven-match win streak, with three wins coming against CAA opponents.
- Delaware's season came to a close at the CAA Tournament when it fell to the College of Charleston, 4-1.
SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS
- West Virginia opens the season Saturday, Feb. 2 at Duquesne prior to clashing with the Panthers on Sunday.
- The Mountaineers finished the 2018-19 season 7-14 overall with a 1-9 mark against Big 12 opponents.
- West Virginia returns three seniors from a year ago, including Paula Goetz, Abigail Rosiello and Kirsten White.
LOOKING AHEAD
- The Panthers conclude their homestand with Akron Thursday, Feb. 7 at 8:30 p.m. at the Oxford Athletic Club. This match was initially canceled due to inclement weather Jan. 20.
