Panthers Conclude 2018 Season at ACC Championship
CARY, N.C. – The University of Pittsburgh team concluded its season Thursday afternoon at Cary Tennis Park. The Panthers dropped a 4-1 decision to the No. 7 seeded Syracuse Orange in the second round of the ACC Championship.
Pitt finishes the year 7-15 overall after playing in the second round of the championship for the first time in program history.
"Syracuse was better than us in the moments that mattered the most," said head coach Alex Santos. "I am really proud of this group of girls for fighting, believing in themselves and stepping up on the big stage."
The 27th-ranked Orange struck first in doubles as the tandem of Sofya Golubovskay and Anna Shkudun blanked the Pitt doubles team of freshman Claudia Bartolome and junior Clara Lucas, 6-0. The 40th-ranked duo of senior Callie Frey and freshman Camila Moreno then dropped a 6-1 decision on court one to No. 10 Gabriela Knutson and Miranda Ramirez.
The junior team of Natsumi Okamoto and Gabriela Rezende were tied 3-3 on court three when the doubles point was clinched.
Moving to singles, Okamoto was the first to finish as her opponent, Dina Hegab, retired early in the first set, tying the team score, 1-1. Okamoto trailed 3-2 when play was suspended.
Syracuse regained the lead after Rezende fell on court one to No. 10 Knutson. Rezende went down in the first set, 6-1, but worked her way back in the second, tying it 6-6. Her comeback fell short, however, as Knutson won the final game en route to the 7-5 victory.
The Orange extended their lead to 3-1 after Bartolome went down at No. 4 singles. She first fell, 6-1, in the opening set to Shkudun, then dropped a 6-3 decision in the second.
Syracuse clinched the match after a win at No. 2 singles. Moreno put up a fight in the opening set, but ultimately fell 7-5 to Ramirez. She then dropped a 6-2 decision in the second set.
