Panthers Resume Action Friday, April 6 Versus Clemson
WEXFORD, Pa. – The University of Pittsburgh tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to the 50th-ranked Boston College Eagles Sunday afternoon at the Oxford Athletic Club.
With the loss, the Panthers drop to 6-10 on the year and 0-9 in ACC play, while the Eagles improve to 11-7 overall and 3-6 against conference foes.
Senior Callie Frey and freshman Claudia Bartolome were the lone Panthers to record wins on the day in singles.
The Eagles got on the board first after clinching the doubles point with consecutive wins on courts three and two.
The junior tandem of Natsumi Okamoto and Luisa Varon were the first pair to fall, 6-2. Junior Clara Lucas and Bartolome then fell by the same score on court two.
Frey and freshman Camila Moreno were up 6-5 on court one before play was suspended.
Boston College took a 2-0 lead in the dual after Moreno fell in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, on court two to Kylie Wilcox.
Pitt then got on the board, thanks to a dominant win by Frey on court five. The Pittsburgh native cruised to a 6-3, 6-4 victory for her 15th singles win of the year and ninth in duals.
The Eagles then jumped to a 3-1 lead after junior Gabriela Rezende fell 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 1 spot to No. 83 Asiya Dair.
A loss by Okamoto on court six would secure the dual victory for the visiting team. Okamoto dropped the first set 6-2 to Elene Tsokilauri, and fell in a hard-fought second set, 7-5.
The Panthers then tacked on another point, thanks to a solid win by Bartolome on court four. The freshman secured the first set, 6-2, but fell in the second, 6-3. Bartolome then bounced back to take the third set 6-2 for her 16th win of the year and 10th in duals. She is now 6-2 when playing No. 4 singles.
Varon was the last Pitt player to conclude action as she fell in three sets. The junior dropped the first set 6-4, but came back to outlast Natasha Irani, 7-5, in the second set. She then fell short in the third set tiebreaker, 12-10.
