EVANSTON, Ill. – The University of Pittsburgh tennis team concluded day two of action at the Wildcat Invite hosted by Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.
They day was highlighted by six different Panthers earning singles wins, while the doubles team of senior Callie Frey and junior Luisa Varon advanced to the semifinals of the Garnet Doubles bracket.
"Today Callie [Frey] was a true senior and showed not only tremendous character but also great love for this program," said head coach Alex Santos. "Camila [Moreno] and Claudia [Bartolome] learned from yesterday and are starting to understand what makes the real difference in college tennis. It was a positive day overall as we did not play some of our best tennis on some court but found a way to succeed. I like the way we are better assuming responsibility and accountability of what competing entails and simultaneously wanting to keep learning."
The second day started off with a round of singles. In the purple flight, Frey picked up a 6-4, 6-4 win over Kentucky's Isabel Iglesias to find herself in the semifinals heading into the final day.
Junior Natsumi Okamoto is also still alive on the right side of the bracket as she will also compete in the semifinals tomorrow. Okamoto recorded a 6-3, 6-1 win over UIC's Mirando Rodriguez in the Green Flight and will take on UIC's Amelia Guevremont tomorrow morning.
Still battling on the left side of the bracket is freshman Claudia Bartolome who took down Marija Jovicici of DePaul in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.
Sophomore Jovana Knezevic outlasted Chicago State's Lorea Gamboa in three sets. Knezevic took the first set 6-3, dropped the second 6-4 but fought back to take the third 6-4.
Freshman Camila Moreno also earned a win as she outlasted UIC's Bianca Zuzu 7-5 in the first set and dominated the second, 6-0.
Junior Clara Lucas was the final Panther to pick up a win on the day as she defeated her opponent in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.
