Morton, Hayes Post First Wins of Pitt Careers
MEN'S RESULTS | WOMEN'S RESULTS
PITTSBURGH – Sophomore Jackson Morton and senior Kelly Hayes picked up individual wins for Pitt men's and women's cross country at their season-opening meet, the Duquesne Duals, Saturday morning at Schenley Park.
The wins were the first of each individual's Pitt cross country career.
"Jackson Morton ran a great race today, from start to finish," men's cross country coach Bryan Jackson said. "The plan was to sit back and kind of lurk and be the 'hunter' the whole race – for all the guys – and win the second half and really bring it home, and that's exactly what he did. He executed a near perfect race."
The meet was scored as duals between the competing schools so no official team results were posted. However, according to individual points scored, the Pitt women were champions and the men were runners-up.
In the women's 5K race, five of the top 11 finishers were from Pitt, including Hayes (17:58.9), junior Miranda Salvo (second, 18:24.0), senior Amy Kelly (fourth, 18:27.1), junior Makenzie Zeh (sixth, 18:36.2) and senior Emily Loeffelholz (11th, 19:03.5).
"Kelly Hayes going out there and getting the victory for us was something that we had talked about," women's cross country coach Adam Bray said. "She executed her plan really well."
In the men's 8K race, four of the top 10 were Panthers, including Morton (26:08.7), junior Sebastian Curtin (second, 26:11.8), junior Nate Sloan (ninth, 26:23.4) and freshman Zach Lefever (26:25.7).
Four female freshmen competed in their first collegiate races, including Emily Burd (26th, 19:50.0), Ally Brunton (30th, 19:54.1), Meghan Bartel (34th, 20:01.0) and Katrina Durrwachter (45th, 20:33.8).
