PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh women’s tennis team earned its second-consecutive shutout victory with a 7-0 decision over Villanova, this afternoon, at Alpha Tennis and Fitness Club. The Panthers improved to 6-6 on the year and 2-3 in Big East action.
Sweeping the doubles, Pitt earned the first point of the match and took a 1-0 lead when the No. 2 duo of freshmen Kimmy Borza and Jocelyn Lu won their eighth contest of the season with an 8-2 victory.
The No. 3 doubles pair of junior Minh Evans and Taylor Washington were the first to finish, claiming an 8-1 victory. Evans placed the ball right at the feet of a Villanova player on an excellent close out play to end the match. The two improved to 2-0 on the year.
Senior Elizabeth Adams and sophomore Gabrielle Catanzariti teamed in No. 1 doubles for the first time in the last three matches. The two recorded their seventh win of the spring.
Later in singles, Adams recorded her 135th career victory with a straight-set win in No. 1 singles. She tied Carlie Smith (2003-07) for second overall on the all-time wins list. Her singles victory was the 65th of her career, ranking third all-time behind Fran Davis (68).
In addition to Adams, all six of the Panthers won their singles matches in straight sets. Sophomore Karma Parbhu was impressive as she collected her third shutout of the season. In fact, she hasn’t lost a game in the past two matches.
Lu opened her match with a 3-0 lead in the first set. She later went on to a 6-2 final in that set before sweeping the second set.
Catanzariti would also win all six games in her second set, despite dropping three in the first series.
Then in the final two matches of the day, both Borza and freshman Brittney Russell posted identical scores at 6-4, 6-1.
